A hunger unleashed

378 Words
Evelyn’s body trembled as the hunger coursed through her, raw and insatiable. It wasn’t the familiar pang of an empty stomach but something deeper, darker—a primal need that clawed at her insides, demanding to be sated. She gritted her teeth, pressing her back against the cold stone wall of her chamber. Sweat beaded on her forehead, though her skin felt colder than ever. Every breath she took carried the scent of something intoxicating, something irresistible—blood. She squeezed her eyes shut, willing herself to block out the maddening scent. She had sworn to herself that she wouldn’t become like them—like the monsters who had taken so much from her. But now, as her body burned with thirst, she wasn’t so sure she could keep that promise. A voice pulled her from the chaos within. “You’re fighting it,” Caius murmured from the doorway, his dark eyes watching her with a mixture of curiosity and something else—understanding. “I have to,” she whispered, her nails digging into her palms. “I won’t let it control me.” Caius stepped forward, his movements fluid, effortless. “You think it’s about control?” he asked. “It’s not. It’s about accepting what you are.” She shot him a glare, her breath ragged. “I’m not like you.” His lips curled into a smirk, but there was no amusement in it. “You are now.” Evelyn’s chest tightened. She hated him for saying it, hated him for being right. The thirst wasn’t going away. If anything, it was getting worse. She could hear the heartbeat of the servant outside the door, the steady rhythm calling to her like a song she couldn’t ignore. “Come with me,” Caius said, extending a hand. She hesitated. Every part of her screamed to resist, to run. But where would she go? This was inside her now, changing her, consuming her. And Caius—he was the only one who could help her understand it. With a shuddering breath, she took his hand. “Good,” he murmured, leading her out into the night. “Because the hunger will only grow stronger. And soon, you’ll have no choice but to feed.” ---
