Darkness bound

The night air was crisp, but Evelyn felt nothing but the burning inside her. The hunger. The desire. The war within her soul. She had tried to fight it, but every moment spent near Caius only made it worse. He was intoxicating in a way that had nothing to do with blood and everything to do with the way he looked at her—like he had been waiting for her for centuries. “I shouldn’t want this,” she whispered, but her voice lacked conviction. Caius smirked, stepping closer. “But you do.” Her breath hitched. She could feel the power in the space between them, an invisible pull stronger than any force she had ever known. Her body betrayed her, leaning toward him, craving his touch. He lifted a hand, fingers brushing against her jaw, his touch as cold as ice and yet it burned. “You can keep pretending, Evelyn,” he murmured. “But we both know you’re not just afraid of me.” His gaze darkened. “You’re afraid of yourself.” Her heart pounded against her ribs, but she didn’t move away. She couldn’t. Then, before she could think, before she could stop herself, she closed the distance between them. Their lips met, and the world shattered. It was fire and ice, pain and pleasure. The kiss was not gentle—it was a claiming, a battle, a surrender all at once. Caius groaned against her lips, his hands tangling in her hair as he pulled her closer. Evelyn melted into him, drowning in the taste of him, the feel of him. In that moment, she realized the truth. She wasn’t afraid of him. She was afraid of how much she wanted him. --- Evelyn stared at the reflection before her—the girl she had been was gone. Her skin was paler, her eyes darker, her lips stained with the remnants of a hunger that had finally won. She had fed. She had taken. And there was no going back. Caius stood beside her, watching her carefully. “You feel it now, don’t you?” She nodded, barely recognizing her own movements. “Yes.” Power. It hummed beneath her skin, a dark promise, a temptation. “This is what you were meant to be,” Caius said. Evelyn turned to him, her expression unreadable. “And what if I don’t want it?” His lips curved into something dangerous. “Then you will spend eternity fighting yourself.” She wasn’t sure which fate was worse. ---
