The World of the Moon — A Guide

There are two worlds existing side by side, although most humans will never realize it. One belongs to them: the world of cities, universities, hospitals, businesses, technology, politics, and ordinary lives. The other exists just beyond their sight, hidden behind carefully protected territories, ancient borders, and centuries of secrecy.

It belongs to the wolves.

Werewolves have lived alongside humanity for generations, adapting to the modern world without ever truly becoming part of it. They own businesses, attend universities, work in hospitals, serve in governments, and build lives that look remarkably human from the outside. Yet beneath those ordinary lives exists an entirely separate society governed by ancient laws, supernatural bloodlines, pack hierarchies, and the ever-watchful presence of the Moon.

To humans, werewolves are myths.

To werewolves, they are simply another part of the world.

And beneath every werewolf's human form lives a wolf.

The Wolf Within

Every werewolf is born with two halves of the same soul: the human and the wolf.

The human carries reason, memory, ambition, conscious thought, and the ability to navigate the complicated world around them. The wolf is instinctive, emotional, fiercely protective, and connected to the supernatural nature of their existence. A wolf is not a pet, a second personality, or a creature that can simply be ignored. It is part of its human; and the bond between them develops throughout their lives.

They share senses and emotions. They can communicate through their minds, particularly as they grow older and learn to control their abilities. A wolf might sense danger before its human notices anything unusual, recognize a familiar scent from miles away, or understand an emotion that its human is still trying to deny.

Wolves also have personalities of their own.

Some are calm and patient, while others are reckless, sarcastic, suspicious, affectionate, or endlessly protective. Their personalities may be completely different from those of their humans, which can make the relationship between the two halves of a soul rather entertaining.

They may argue.

They may disagree.

They may even hold grudges.

But when one suffers, the other feels it.

When one is afraid, the other knows.

And when one is pushed beyond their limits, the other will often be the first to fight back.

The wolf remembers what the human tries to forget.

The Pack Hierarchy

Werewolves rarely live alone. Most belong to packs, which function as families, communities, political organizations, and territorial units. Every pack has its own customs and traditions, but most follow the same basic hierarchy.

At the top stands the Alpha.

The Alpha is responsible for the safety and future of the pack, controls its territory, commands its warriors, settles disputes, and represents the pack in political matters. An Alpha's wolf is generally stronger and more dominant than those of ordinary pack members, allowing them to command obedience through both authority and instinct.

Beside the Alpha stands the Beta, usually their closest confidant, strategist, and second-in-command. A Beta may oversee warriors, handle internal disputes, manage pack affairs, and serve as the person who reminds an impulsive Alpha that not every problem needs to be solved by punching someone.

Then come the Gammas.

Gammas are highly capable warriors and trusted officers who often serve as protectors of the Alpha's family, commanders of specialized forces, or advisors to the pack leadership. Their position carries considerable respect, although it remains beneath the Beta and Alpha.

Below them are the rest of the pack: warriors, hunters, healers, scholars, traders, craftspeople, families, and children.

Every wolf contributes something.

Not every pack, however, believes every wolf is equally valuable.

Some societies believe leadership should be earned through ability and character. Others place enormous importance on bloodline, strength, and ancestry. That difference has created rivalries, political conflicts, and wars throughout supernatural history.

The Lycans

Among the rarest and most powerful wolves are the Lycans.

Unlike ordinary werewolves, Lycans possess extraordinary physical strength, speed, senses, healing abilities, and dominance. Their connection with their wolves is also considerably deeper, and their wolves are often much larger and more powerful than those of ordinary pack members.

True Lycans are rare enough that many wolves will never meet one.

The strongest Lycan bloodline is traditionally associated with kingship, and the Lycan King rules over an enormous territory populated by thousands of wolves.

His authority differs from that of an ordinary Alpha. While individual packs may retain their own leaders, the Lycan King holds influence over multiple territories and can intervene when threats extend beyond a single pack.

Because of their power, Lycans have always inspired fear as well as respect.

Some packs see the Lycan King as their greatest protector.

Others see him as a dangerous political force.

And among certain older packs, the stories have become considerably darker. Children are warned not to wander too far from home because the Lycan King might find them. Mothers use their name to frighten disobedient children into behaving. Generations of exaggerated stories have transformed the King into something almost mythical—a creature associated with hunting, blood, and punishment.

The truth, as with most legends, is considerably more complicated.

The Moon Goddess

Every wolf is connected to the Moon.

According to the oldest stories, the Moon Goddess created the wolves and gave them their connection to one another. She is believed to watch over their bloodlines, guide the bonds between mates, and occasionally choose certain wolves for abilities beyond those naturally possessed by their kind.

These abilities are known as Moon Gifts.

The Moon does not control every decision a wolf makes, nor does being chosen guarantee a life without suffering.

A Gift is not necessarily a blessing.

Sometimes it is a burden.

Sometimes it is a weapon.

And sometimes it is both.

Moon Gifts

Every werewolf possesses enhanced strength, speed, senses, healing, and shifting abilities. A Moon Gift is something beyond these natural traits, an ability that appears only in certain individuals or bloodlines.

Some Gifted wolves can heal injuries that ordinary supernatural healing cannot touch. Others possess telepathy, elemental manipulation, prophetic visions, emotional influence, protective abilities, heightened perception, or powers that have never been properly documented.

Gifts generally awaken around the age of sixteen, although the Moon has never been entirely predictable.

Some awaken earlier.

Others remain dormant for years.

Some disappear from a bloodline entirely before unexpectedly returning generations later.

Every Gift also carries a cost.

A healer may absorb another person's pain or exhaustion. A seer may struggle to distinguish visions from reality. A telepath may become overwhelmed by the thoughts surrounding them, while someone capable of manipulating emotions can risk losing control of their own.

The stronger the Gift, the greater the danger of using it carelessly.

Because of this, different packs treat Gifted wolves differently. Some protect them, some revere them, and others see their abilities as resources that should serve the entire pack.

That belief has led to some of the darkest moments in supernatural history.

The Mate Bond

Of all the Moon's mysteries, none is more deeply woven into wolf society than the Mate Bond.

A fated mate is recognized through the wolves first. Scent, instinct, emotion, and an inexplicable sense of familiarity can reveal the connection before the human mind has fully accepted it.

For some wolves, recognition is immediate. For others, the bond takes time to reveal itself.

A Mate Bond creates a powerful connection between two wolves. Their instincts become intertwined, their emotions can affect one another more strongly, and their wolves may communicate in ways that ordinary wolves cannot.

Yet the Mate Bond does not erase free will.

A mate can still hurt you.

A mate can still betray you.

A mate can still make the wrong choice.

The Moon may decide who belongs together, but she does not dictate what those people do with the bond once it exists.

That distinction has been the cause of both beautiful love stories and devastating tragedies.

The Rare Bloodlines

Some Gifts appear repeatedly within particular families, passed from one generation to another like an invisible inheritance. Others disappear for centuries before resurfacing unexpectedly. Among the oldest and least understood legends are the Moonmarked.

Very few modern wolves know whether they ever truly existed.

Ancient records describe the Moonmarked as healers directly touched by the Moon, possessing abilities far beyond ordinary healing. Their connection to life itself was said to be unusually strong, allowing them to sense injuries, mend wounds thought impossible to heal, and interact with supernatural energy in ways other Gifted wolves could not.

Some stories claim that their abilities could even affect other Gifts. Others describe them as protectors of supernatural balance.

Most of the records concerning the Moonmarked were lost, destroyed, or deliberately buried.

Eventually, the bloodline was believed to have disappeared completely.

As far as modern supernatural society knows, it is nothing more than an old legend.

Rogues

Not every wolf belongs to a pack.

Some leave by choice. Others are exiled, abandoned, or forced into hiding. These wolves become known as rogues, although the term covers everything from solitary wolves simply seeking freedom to violent criminals who prey upon other packs.

Most territories maintain warriors trained to defend their borders against dangerous rogue groups. Rogue attacks can become serious threats when they involve kidnappings, murders, territorial invasions, or attempts to destabilize pack governments.

But the distinction between good and evil is not always as simple as pack versus rogue.

Not every rogue is dangerous.

And not every threat comes from outside a pack.

Some of the greatest dangers in supernatural history have worn the same symbols, carried the same blood, and sat at the same tables as the people they eventually betrayed.

The Old Ways

The supernatural world has changed considerably over the centuries.

Some packs have embraced modern society almost completely. Their wolves attend human universities, work ordinary jobs, live in cities, and use technology just as humans do. Their ancient traditions remain, but they have adapted them to fit the modern world.

Other packs have resisted that change.

They continue to follow customs created hundreds of years ago, placing enormous importance on bloodlines, hierarchy, arranged alliances, political marriages, and the authority of powerful families.

To outsiders, these packs may appear perfectly modern.

Behind closed doors, however, old beliefs can still determine who deserves power, who is considered valuable, and who is expected to sacrifice their happiness for the sake of the pack.

The oldest traditions are not always the most honorable ones.

Sometimes they are simply the ones that survived the longest.

A World Beginning to Change

For generations, the supernatural world has maintained a fragile balance. Packs protect their territories, Alphas negotiate alliances, wolves find their mates, Gifts awaken, and dangerous rogues are hunted when they threaten the peace.

Most wolves believe they understand the rules.

They believe the old bloodlines are nothing more than history. They believe the forgotten Gifts have disappeared. They believe ancient stories belong in dusty books and children's bedtime tales rather than the world they live in.

But the Moon remembers everything.

She remembers bloodlines that were erased.

She remembers Gifts that were buried.

She remembers promises that were broken and bonds that were severed.

And sometimes, when the world has forgotten something important, she has a way of bringing it back.

Not with a warning.

Not with an announcement.

Sometimes, she simply awakens something that has been sleeping for generations.

A Gift.

A bloodline.

A wolf.

And when that happens, the carefully maintained balance of the supernatural world begins to shift.

Because there are secrets old enough to become legends, and legends powerful enough to become dangerous when they return.

The wolves simply haven't realized it yet.

The Moon has.
