Few months later,
I settled in New York City cutting all contacts with my late husband's family. Alice, Jake's mother has tried to reach me, sending notes and fax messages which pissed me off as f**k.
I am a fashion designer by profession and needless to say, despite my cold attitude, I'm very creative and I love designing clothes. I don't hire models because I used some of Jake's money to bring my business back up into the lame light from where I left it.
I was to attend the Fashion and Art Empire dinner. I knew what it took for me to be invited here few months after my husband's death and it had nothing to do with the fact that he died for a humble cause. I went into extensive training and business expansion to promote my business I abandoned after I got married. I worked on it from time to time but only when Jake left for his assignments and I had nothing to do but Jake was my priority.
Besides fellow fashion designers and notable people of art, bloggers were invited as well which meant that they are here snooping around for the next big gist under their humble facade of wanting to enjoy the party.
I walked in drenched from the rain because the uber broke down on the way and there was a traffic jam plus I was a newbie so my punctuality matters..a lot.
I waltz in looking collected and not shy in the least, not wanting to show any hint of unbridled emotion. I sat down at the table ignoring the pitiful stares and harsh whispers from haters.
"Sorry I'm late" A lazy drawl I recognize too well said otherwise fluttering sparks to my chest."Traffic". Chiselled chin, whiskey eyes, calculative grin...There he was. He glanced at me with indifference before turning to the lady at his right while he sat beside me. Apparently almost everyone in the room wanted to talk to him and no one paid attention to the drenched woman by his side. Of course he won't acknowledge me after I said we should bury the past like it didn't matter. The past containing Jake and him.
"Can I sit down here instead?" A beautiful blonde asked me. I recognized her although I haven't seen her in years. Rage went through my veins, she was the only person capable of making me feel demoted and useless. Realization dawned on her as she took in my face."Eden? You look the same, the pitiful being I won against. You were always a bore I wonder who invited you here. How is Jake?" she smirked. I bit my lips turning my face away feeling the hurt wash through me. I wanted to stand but a large hand pulled me down holding me firmly. He smiled sweetly making me almost believe he did care but he was calculative as always. Charlotte Windsor insulted Jake and he was just defending his honour."She's with me, aren't you darling?"His gaze dropped down to meet mine silently daring me. I swallowed my pride and gave a nod. He placed a kiss on my forehead."Good girl"
Charlotte knew better than to interrupt, throwing her overrated tantrums. Some women walked up to me thinking that they wanted to ask about my dresses instead they questioned my relationship with Kieran. I faked a laugh while waving us off as friends but deep down, I was sick of this dinner and wanted to go home. That was when the worse happened, it started raining cats and dogs outside.
Turning to Kieran who was in the company of women who weren't ready to let him go. It seemed everyone here isn't bothered about how to go home in the rain because they had a car obviously. Everyone except me. The dinner was coming to an end gradually and I prayed to God that this rain will cease because I plan on walking home. A taxi would be too expensive and Ubers don't come around this area often.
"Hey Eden" His velvet voice spoke igniting that fire I had buried for years even while I was married to Jake. I turned to him giving a scrowl. "What was that stunt you pulled there?" I hissed. He frowned. "Let me ask, the stunt, the one where I saved your sweet ass? A thank you would do you nice... Frost". I pulled back knowing how immature I'll sound." You kissed me it made me flustered. Bloggers were there, Kieran what if they formulate that we're in a relationship or worse f*****g each other?" I whisper- yelled. "You were flustered?" He asked with a cocky grin. I narrowed my eyes in disbelief, was that the only thing I said?.
"I would love to kiss you again but I have a girlfriend, thank you". he chuckled. "More like girlfriends...manwhore" I murmured. He walked away and once again, I sent the only person who can help me right now away. I chase after him, the sounds my heels make echoing in the hallway. "Kieran wait" I yelled. He must have heard me and walked faster till he disappeared. I turned around searching for him. He was right in front of me then...
"Looking for me?" His deep velvety voice spoke right behind me. My breathed hitched as I turned to him trying to control my racing heart. "What's the problem, Frost?" he asked. I bit down on my lips before looking around making sure no one sees me this vulnerable."I need a ride home". He stares at me for something like an eternity before he spoke."No". With that, he turned to leave. "Please Kieran I'll do anything...that isn't outrageous" I said, going over the only option he can accept.
"I'll drive you home only if you let me drive you every day and night till you get a car that is" he said staring me down.
"That's outrageous. You must be so busy with work and stuff, I can't intrude" I said. " I have taxis and Uber for that"
"Eden" he spoke with finality that sends shivers down my spine. I dropped my shoulders formulating a plan while I pretended to agree."Fine let's go" I said.
His face beamed in a smile, the most gorgeous smile I've ever seen. "Lead the way, Frost". I rolled my eyes knowing that I might regret it.
