Violeta’s POV ICE CLASSIC 2026: OFFICIAL PAIRINGS Nathan Brooks & Sienna Donovan Finn Gallagher & Violeta Whitmore Mason Carter & Chloe Bennett Liam Novak & Harper Sinclair The list went on, but I didn’t care about the rest. I had seen exactly what I had been searching for. The names were as bold as ever on the large screen at the end of the sports arena. I didn’t know which hurt most, the fact that I am no longer number one or the fact that they had paired Nathan with Sienna without even a second thought about me. Everyone knows the names are listed out according to ranking based on our semester reports. I have never been second place, at least not since high school. Nathan and Sienna kept going with no care in the world, both oblivious to the silence that had fallen amongst the little crowd they had gathered. “Vi,” Harper called behind me, but her voice sounded far away... too far away. I forcefully pushed my legs forward, keeping my eyes glued on them as they glided around the ice with no care in the world. They are even wearing matching outfits. I was only gone for two f*****g days, not two weeks. How was I so easily replaced? I feel so f*****g stupid. I believed Nathan when he said he wouldn’t pair with anyone other than me. He said since he is captain of the hockey team, he could make a stand and it would be adhered to, and everyone knows he really does have that kind of power. He really did make a stance... but not with me. “Vi, please wait,” Harper called out again. This time, her voice was louder, her footsteps echoing as she rushed to catch up with me, but I only increased my pace. All eyes were on me now except the people I wanted to see me. I need them to see me, to look me in the eye and tell me if I have really been a fool this time. My vision began to blur as I got closer, a sudden tightness in my chest I couldn’t explain taking over as so many thoughts flooded in. “Violeta, you have been doing exceptionally well all year and things are looking up for you, but you will need to ensure you maintain your position at the top of the team and also get paired with someone extremely good too for the Ice Classic. That is your best shot right now at getting noticed by the ISU Elite Program.” Those were Coach Petrova’s exact words to me before I left here on Friday, and today, I have achieved nothing that she talked about. I can’t skate with Finn Gallagher. He is good, but he is not my type of good. He is a soft and calm skater, just like me, and that is not what I need. I need a complete opposite of myself. Mum was right after all. I really don’t deserve to be at the top... “Violeta.” A very much shocked Nathan finally noticed me, immediately letting go of Sienna like she burned him, but it wasn’t necessary. It was too late... “Hi, boyfriend.” I pulled the brightest smile I could muster, doing my best to blink back the tears that had already made their way to my eyes. “Hi, best friend,” I added, moving my eyes to Sienna, who looked anything but remorseful. If I’m not mistaken, she wanted me to find out this way. “Vi, it’s not what it looks like. I didn’t want this.” “Of course you didn’t.” “It was out of your control, right?” I chuckled. “Yes, baby. I promise it was meant to be you.” He was making his way over to the end of the rink as he spoke, leaving a very furious Sienna behind. “Yet you are already dancing with her the morning the list came out before even talking with me about any of this?” They must really take me for such a fool. “It’s not like that, baby. Coach...” “Coach? Which coach exactly? Coach Petrova I saw in the Dean’s office on my way here? Or do we have a new coach I am not aware of?” I was slowly losing it, and I didn’t even know how to control myself. “I... they...” “f*****g hell, Nathan, you are even using our song... OUR FREAKING SONG!” I screamed, unable to hold myself. Footsteps sounded across the arena as other students from outside started making their way in, whispers flying around. Nathan finally got off the ice, taking his skating boots off and hurrying over to me. He reached forward to touch me, but... “Don’t you f*****g touch me,” I spat, eliciting gasps from the crowd. People had started fishing their phones out, taking pictures and videos, but I couldn’t care less right now... consequences be damned. “When did you find out?” “Vi...” “I said when did you find out, Nathan?” “Friday.” My stomach dropped. He knew all weekend. “Friday?” He looked away. He couldn’t even look me in the eyes. “The list was finalized Friday afternoon,” he continued, his eyes anywhere but on me. “And you couldn’t tell me? You waited for me to find out this way?” “I tried reaching you, but your phone kept going to voicemail.” I scoffed in disbelief at his lie of an excuse. “Oh, now you suddenly don’t know how to reach me when you want to. You suddenly can’t come to my house over the weekends? But when you want recommendations from my father, your lying ass would even be at my place before me, right?” His eyes widened in shock... I guess everyone got too used to calm Violeta. My eyes moved to Sienna, who was now standing behind Nathan, her face blank. “You have known all this while, haven’t you?” Silence. “Freaking answer me, Sienna.” “You always get everything, Violeta. Let there be change for once.” Her words hit me harder than I expected. I always got everything? That was my last straw. I am so done here. “Everything that I have gotten up to this point, I earned, Sienna. It is not my fault that you are nothing but a jealous, lying, fake b***h,” I spat, loving the shock on everyone’s face at my outburst. “You know what? I wish you both the very best, but I can promise you both one thing. I will definitely be back on top in a way no one will see coming.” I am fully aware that I am only speaking out of nowhere and that the only way I am ever going to be exactly where I am meant to be is if a miraculous hockey player much better than Nathan suddenly falls from the sky. Other than that, I am cooked. Fucking fake assholes everywhere. I turned on my heels, storming out of the arena, leaving everyone speechless. I could still hear Harper running after me, but I couldn’t care less. It would even be for the best if she doesn’t catch up with me. I made a sharp turn, heading towards Coach Petrova’s office, needing answers for all of this. I muttered incoherently to myself as I walked, needing a way to release this anger and fast. I hated being angry, and only one person in this world knows why... fortunately, he is miles away. Or so I thought. Just as I made the final turn to the road leading to her office, I collided with a very hard wall, immediately losing my footing and heading for the ground... but then the wall caught me. No, that’s not right. The wall doesn’t have hands, especially not arms this strong and with sharp reflexes. Something in my chest tightened before I even saw the face of my saviour... like my heart already knew my world had just taken a whole different turn before I even did. “So you still walk so fast when you are angry, Vi.” Only one person ever pronounced my name so intimately... only one voice could wake my body up with just one sentence.
