Briar I stood there, glowing like a human nightlight, and stared at the locked door. Okay, Spirit Wolf powers, do your thing. Focusing on the door, I extended my hand, willing the lock to open. The seconds ticked by, but nothing happened. The lock remained stubbornly in place, mocking my efforts. "Open sesame?" I tried, feeling ridiculous. Unsurprisingly, still nothing. Not even a rattle. "Maybe try imagining the mechanism inside the lock?" Ivy suggested, her mental voice tinged with hope. I nodded, closing my eyes and picturing the inner workings of the lock. Tumblers, springs, all moving in perfect harmony to release the bolt. I pushed my will towards it, imagining the satisfying click of freedom. After a solid minute of intense staring and mental gymnastics, I had to admit defeat.
