Briar I froze in the doorway, my heart skipping a beat at the sight of the two men blocking my path. One was built like a linebacker, all broad shoulders and bulging muscles that threatened to burst through his suit. The other was leaner, with wire-rimmed glasses perched on his nose and an air of calculated intelligence. Despite their vastly different builds, they both exuded an aura of quiet menace that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. The one with glasses smiled politely, but it didn't reach his eyes. "Can we help you with something, Miss Ranger?" I swallowed hard, forcing a casual tone. "Oh, just thought I'd go for a walk. You know, get some fresh air, stretch my legs a bit."
