CHAPTER 6 — THE GATE

1489 Words
The following morning, the eastern training sector was unusually quiet. A large security perimeter had been established around the area. Several government vehicles surrounded a massive structure that had appeared overnight. A Gate. It floated several meters above the ground, twisting like a wound in the air. Blue-black energy moved across its surface. Students gathered behind the safety barriers. Some whispered excitedly. Others looked nervous. Shorui stood among them, staring at the Gate. His terminal displayed the assignment. [DUNGEON TRAINING OPPORTUNITY] [LOCATION: EASTERN TRAINING SECTOR] [CLASSIFICATION: F-CLASS] [STATUS: STABLE] [PARTICIPATION: OPTIONAL] Shorui remembered Jo Seph's warning. You're not going to that Dungeon. He should have listened. He knew that. But there was something about the Gate that made it impossible for him to walk away. The faint pressure inside his chest had returned. His Resonance was reacting. Again. "You're here." Shorui turned. Mike Khel stood beside him. Red hair. Confident expression. Training uniform. "I thought Jo told you not to come." Shorui frowned. "How do you know?" Mike shrugged. "I saw him talking to you yesterday." "You were watching?" "I notice things." Before Shorui could respond, Adam appeared behind them. "You two are already arguing?" "We're not arguing," Shorui said. "Yet." Adam smiled. He looked toward the Gate. "That's bigger than I expected." Mike nodded. "F-Class Gates aren't usually this large." Shorui stared at it. "Something's wrong." Adam looked at him. "What?" "I don't know." The Gate pulsed. For a brief moment, Shorui felt something inside his body respond. His fingers tingled. Then the sensation disappeared. Adam noticed. "You felt it again?" Shorui nodded. Mike's expression became serious. "Your Adaptation?" "I don't think so." Before they could continue, a voice came over the loudspeaker. "All participating students, report to the designated assembly area." The students began moving. A group of instructors stood near the Gate. Among them was Jo Seph. Shorui immediately noticed him. Their eyes met. Jo's expression was unreadable. Shorui walked toward him. "You said I shouldn't come." "I did." "Then why is my name still on the participant list?" Jo looked at the terminal in Shorui's hand. "Because I didn't remove it." Shorui frowned. "Why?" "Because removing you would raise more questions." "About my Resonance?" Jo nodded. Shorui lowered his voice. "You think someone is controlling the assignment." "I think someone wants you inside." The words made Shorui stop. "Why?" Jo looked toward the Gate. "That's what I intend to find out." Mike approached. "Then you're coming with us?" Jo looked at him. "Yes." Mike's expression relaxed slightly. Adam raised his hand. "Just to confirm... when you say 'with us,' you mean you're actually coming inside, right?" Jo nodded. "Yes." Adam smiled. "Great. I suddenly feel much safer." Jo looked at him. "You shouldn't." Adam's smile disappeared. "...Why?" Jo turned away. "Because I don't know what's inside." --- The instructors began checking the participants. Every student had to scan their Resonance identification. One by one. "C-Class." "Approved." "B-Class." "Approved." "A-Class." The scanner beeped. Mike stepped forward. "A-Class Resonant. Mike Khel." The system confirmed his identity. [ACCESS APPROVED] Mike stepped aside. Adam approached next. "C-Class Resonant. Adam Joyce." [ACCESS APPROVED] He turned toward Shorui. "Your turn." Shorui stepped forward. He placed his hand against the scanner. The machine activated. [IDENTIFICATION] [SHORUI SHAN] [CLASSIFICATION: F] [ABILITY: ADAPTATION] [ACCESS APPROVED] Then— The machine flickered. Only for a fraction of a second. Jo noticed. Mike noticed. Shorui noticed. Adam didn't. "Everything okay?" Adam asked. The instructor looked at the scanner. "It seems fine." Jo said nothing. He simply stared at Shorui. --- The team gathered before the Gate. There were twelve students in total. Two instructors. And Jo Seph. The students were divided into groups based on their abilities. Mike was placed at the front. Adam was assigned to the middle. Shorui was placed near the rear. Shorui looked at the arrangement. "Why am I at the back?" The instructor answered. "Because you're F-Class." Shorui didn't argue. He understood. F-Class students weren't expected to fight. They were expected to support the stronger Resonants. Mike glanced back. "Stay close." Shorui looked at him. "I can take care of myself." Mike smirked. "That's what I'm worried about." Adam laughed. "Don't worry, Shorui. I'll protect you." Shorui looked at him. "You?" "Absolutely." Adam placed a hand over his chest. "I am a professional." Mike stared at him. "You're C-Class." "Exactly." "That's not what professional means." Adam ignored him. The Gate began to shake. A deep sound echoed across the training sector. The instructors stepped back. "Everyone, prepare." The blue-black surface of the Gate opened. Cold air rushed outward. The temperature suddenly dropped. Several students shivered. Shorui felt something strange. The moment the Gate opened— His Resonance reacted. Not with pain. Not with fear. Recognition. His heart began beating faster. He stared into the darkness beyond the Gate. Something was calling him. Not with words. With Resonance. [UNKNOWN ENVIRONMENT DETECTED.] Shorui's eyes widened. The notification disappeared before anyone else could see it. Then another appeared. [ADAPTATION RESPONSE: 0.01%] Shorui clenched his fist. "Again..." "What?" Adam asked. "Nothing." Jo looked at him. He had heard. But he said nothing. "Move." The first group entered the Gate. One by one, the students followed. Mike stepped through. Adam followed. Shorui stood before the Gate. For a moment, he hesitated. Then he stepped forward. The world disappeared. --- Shorui opened his eyes. Silence. That was the first thing he noticed. There was no academy. No city. No sound of traffic. No voices. Only an enormous forest stretching into the distance. Dark trees surrounded them. Their branches twisted unnaturally toward the sky. A faint blue mist covered the ground. Adam looked around. "Okay." He swallowed. "This definitely wasn't in the academy brochure." Mike walked forward. "Stay alert." The other students began forming their groups. The instructors checked their equipment. Jo remained silent. He was staring at the trees. Something was wrong. Shorui could feel it. The Resonance inside the Dungeon was incredibly dense. Every breath felt heavier. His skin tingled. [ENVIRONMENTAL RESONANCE DETECTED.] [ADAPTATION RESPONSE: 0.04%] Shorui stared at the message. The number was increasing. Slowly. But it was increasing. Jo noticed his expression. "What do you feel?" "Pressure." "Anything else?" Shorui looked around. "Like something is watching us." Jo's face hardened. "Everyone." His voice carried through the group. "Stay together." The students immediately became more serious. Mike moved toward the front. Adam stayed beside Shorui. They began walking. The forest seemed endless. After several minutes, one of the students stopped. "There's something ahead." Everyone froze. A low growl echoed through the trees. Then another. And another. Shapes began moving between the trunks. Monsters. Small, wolf-like creatures with black fur and glowing blue eyes. The instructor raised his hand. "F-Class monsters." Mike stepped forward. "I'll handle them." Crimson flames appeared around his hands. The monsters charged. Mike moved. The first creature was struck by a wave of crimson fire. It disappeared in seconds. Another jumped from the side. Mike turned. A second burst of flame sent it crashing into a tree. The remaining creatures hesitated. Then Adam raised his hand. "Let me try." A monster leapt toward him. Adam moved his fingers. The creature suddenly changed direction in midair. Its own momentum carried it past him. Adam smiled. "Vector Shift." He redirected the monster into the ground. The creature was knocked unconscious. Shorui watched. Adam's ability was incredible. He didn't overpower his opponents. He controlled their movement. Shorui understood why Adam had been classified as C-Class. The remaining monsters were quickly defeated. The students relaxed. Some laughed. Others began collecting the Resonance Crystals left behind. "See?" Adam said. "Easy." Mike looked deeper into the forest. "It's too easy." Shorui looked at him. Mike's expression was serious. "An F-Class Dungeon shouldn't have this much Resonance density." Jo nodded. "He's right." The instructor checked the readings. "Everything is within acceptable parameters." Jo walked over. "Give me that." He examined the device. His eyes narrowed. "The readings are changing." The instructor frowned. "What?" Jo pointed at the screen. "Look." The number increased. Then decreased. Then increased again. The device began making a faint warning sound. [RESONANCE FLUCTUATION] [ENVIRONMENTAL STABILITY: 91%] The number dropped. [87%] [84%] Then suddenly— [96%] The students stared. Adam whispered: "That isn't normal." "No," Jo said. "It isn't." Shorui looked into the forest. Something had changed. The trees seemed darker. The mist thicker. And somewhere in the distance— A bell rang. Once. Everyone froze. A second bell rang. Then a third. Mike turned toward Jo. "What was that?" Jo didn't answer. Because he knew. There was no bell listed in the Dungeon's environmental readings. And yet it had sounded. Shorui felt the pressure inside his chest grow stronger. His Resonance pulsed. [UNKNOWN SIGNAL DETECTED.] His eyes widened. The message disappeared. Then a final notification appeared. [ADAPTATION RESPONSE: 0.17%] Shorui whispered: "What are you?" Deep within the forest... something answered. Not with words. With another bell.
