CHAPTER THREEThe family was in the living room. They were watching a nature program about pandas. Katalina and Juanita had fallen in love with pandas now that the local zoo was breeding them.
Ernesto stood in the darkened hallway getting his breath. His chest ached, and his heart was still pounding. He didn’t realize until now that his T-shirt was wet with perspiration.
“That you, Ernie?” Dad called out.
“Yeah, Dad, I’m taking a shower,” Ernesto called back. He staggered toward the bathroom, pulling his soaking T-shirt over his head as he edged in. He wouldn’t tell his parents what had happened tonight. He would just make them worry. What good would it do to tell them? Ernesto would take his shower, get into clean clothes, and tell them the good news that he had a job.
