Day watched the police vehicles disappear towards the coast road. Ben’s frightened face in the window of the police car left him in no doubt that once again, despite his assertion to Helen, he had no choice but to get involved.
A text arrived which he checked before setting off. It was from Helen to say that she and Alex were walking to Taverna O Thanasis. This was not unreasonable as there was virtually no food in the house. As he drove away from Paralia Votsala he decided he was not only hungry but he wanted the company of his friends, and would join them.
Thanasis’s greeting became muted once he saw Day’s expression. Day sat down with Helen and Alex, and poured himself water from the bottle on the table.
“How was Ben?” Helen asked.
