29 It was the middle of the day by the time Day left The Black Acorn. His only desire was to go straight home to Filoti and get some rest. He had slept badly the night before and still felt drained from the drunken night with Ben. He must be getting old. Come to think of it, he felt rather ill. He drove slowly and carefully the few kilometres from Halki to Filoti, and opened the door to his cool house with relief. He heard Helen call him from the balcony, where she was reading. “How did it go?” she asked sympathetically. Why had he not expected her to be sympathetic? He was grateful, but was in no mood to talk. “Everything’s fine. I’m going for a nap. I’ll see you in a while.” As he closed his bedroom door he shook his head. Everything fine?
