Chapter Four

1650 Words
Roam drops me at home but I hesitate to go inside, what happens if my parents confirm what Roam has been saying? How can I live my life knowing everything I’ve ever known is fake. I huff out a breath and steel myself for what is about to happen; I turn the door handle and walk inside. “Wren honey is that you?” Mum calls from the kitchen. “Yeah Mum” I call back, pausing in the hallway, not knowing what to do. “Can you come in here please?” she calls back. I sigh and turn towards the kitchen, I might as well get this over with. I step into the kitchen and find my mum sitting at the counter with my dad and they look concerned. I take a seat opposite them and prepare myself for my world to be turned upside down. “You probably have a lot of questions honey” mum states, “ask us anything you want” she gives me a small smile and grabs my dads hand. “Is it all true?” I ask, I’m sure they know what Roam and Annika told me. Mum grimaces before responding, “I’m so sorry baby” she whispers. I feel my emotion bumble to the surface and I want to cry. “My whole life you’ve lied to me!” I yell, standing up and shoving my chair back. I feel a familiar tingling in my hands but try to ignore it. “Everything I’ve ever known is fake, none of my life is real.” Then I remember something, “what happened in Melbourne?” I demand. My mum looks at my dad and looks as though she doesn’t really want to tell me. Well f**k this! I deserve answers. “Honey, look the thing about Melbourne is th-” “Tell me the truth! For once in your lives, give me the answers I deserve” I was livid, and the tingling was getting stronger, I knew if I looked down at my hands, black flames would be dancing across my hands. “Wren you need to calm down, please” Mum pleaded, but how could I when even now, they were trying to lie to me. “How can I? You need to tell me that truth about Melbourne.” I pleaded, I needed to know what had happened and why I couldn’t remember anything. My dad sighed and gestured for me to sit down. I took a deep breath trying to calm myself and took a seat; the tingling died down a little. “Melbourne wasn’t supposed to happen” Dad states before continuing. “We were set, you had another 4 years before Luther would come and you’d die and be reborn. We had everything in place, it was the same routine we had had for forever. But we didn’t anticipate you making close friends or finding a boy who resonated to you so strongly. Roam is your mate for god sakes, there isn’t supposed to be another.” My dad ran his hand down his face, he looked more tired than normal. “We could tell that Nico loved you from the first time you bought him home to meet us, hell how could he not? You’re beautiful and incredible.” Dad smiled at me and reached across to give my hand a quick squeeze. But I was focused on the name, Nico…. It felt so familiar in my mind but I couldn’t place the memories. “I did some investigating into him at work and discovered that he was a descendant of the Dragos line. We had no idea that it was possible” his brown bunched together and confusion covered his face. “How is that possible?” I asked. “Elementali used to take human lovers, believing that they couldn’t conceive children but it seems as though someone had. Andrei was incredibly committed to his wife but he had a brother, Mihai. It seems as though he took a human lover and she got pregnant. No one is sure how it was possible or how she managed to hide the pregnancy. But Nico is Mihai’s grandson. He had no powers and was mostly human, he didn’t know about his other side it seemed.” I couldn’t believe this, my mind was being flooded with information today. “What happened to Nico? You keep talking about him in the past tense” I noted and stared pointedly at my dad. “He died” Mum whispered. I blinked at her, not believing she had just blurted it out so suddenly and surely. “W-what?” I questioned. “You became so close, you started resonating to him. That’s when your soul sings to it’s other half. The thing is you had already resonated before; to Roam.” Mum explained. I blinked again, not quite believing what I was hearing. “How could that happen? I thought Roam was my mate?” I asked, so confused by this situation. “He is, it didn’t make sense to us either, so we called Roam and had him come to Melbourne. He was shocked, mad and hurt I guess that he had to stay away and he could lose you because of it. But it didn’t happen, you merged with Nico and were still resonating to Roam, it should not have happened.” Dad state matter of fact. “You still resonated to each other; you had two soul mates. A human and Roam, we had never heard of it happening before, it almost seemed too impossible.” Mum explained to me. I still couldn’t quite believe what they were saying. How is two soul mates possible and when am I going to wake up from this crazy dream. “What happened to Nico?” I asked quietly, not sure I wanted to know the answer. “Luther found out about you merging and believed that it had been to Roam so he tracked you down in Melbourne. He came with Emily and Danika to find you and try and stop you but of course when he got here he realised it wasn’t Roam you had merged with, not yet anyway. Nico didn’t have any powers and that made him vulnerable. He loved you, we know he did.” Mum finished quietly. “What happened to Nico mum?” I growled, feeling the tingling begin again. “Emily is a Caeli – she controls air and she’s very strong especially when she teams up with her sister. She killed Nico” Mum had tears in her eyes when she finished. I felt the emotion bubble up in me and the tears fill my eyes, I don’t remember him but my heart hurts and the pain I feel hearing about his death is almost unbearable. “That doesn’t explain the black out and loss of memories. Why can’t I remember him if he was my mate” I breath out, trying to calm myself down, the tendrils of black flame have snaked up my arms now and I can see my parents hesitant looks and caution on their faces. “You can’t survive if your mate dies Wren. Even an Elementali as strong as you can’t survive that. When Nico took his last breath, you died. Roam carried you home and told us to bring you home to Hillshore when you woke again.” Mum kept glancing at my hands and the black flames now covering my arms as she spoke. She looked worried, and I don’t blame her. It was a scary sight to say the least. “When you woke again you didn’t remember anything about Nico and we didn’t want to tell you. We knew that as soon as we got to Hillshore that you would be in danger with Luther and that Roam and Annika would tell you the truth. It’s what you deserved from the beginning and for that we’re sorry” Mum looked sad as she finished telling me about Melbourne. I could see on her face that she regretted never telling me the truth before. I figured when I came home from Roam and Annika’s that everything would go back to normal and that they had just been insane, or trying to trick the new girl into believing some crazy fantasy story. But I knew it was true, as I sat here and listened to them tell me about Melbourne and Nico. About my mate and how he died, I saw his face in my mind and I could feel his hand of my face and how he smelt. Rage bubbled inside me, pain, anger and sadness crept up into my mind until a searing pain was all that was left. I couldn’t think as I leapt up from my seat, spun around and sprinted out into the back yard. When I made it outside I flung my arms up and screamed, as I did black flames spilled from my hands and flew far into the night sky. I screamed and cried until I was too tired and fell to the ground. Exhaustion came over me as I felt my body begin to fade to darkness. The last thing I remember is a handsome face with bright blue eyes staring at me with concern before I was picked up and everything faded away.
