Chapter Nineteen

1527 Words
A week before her birthday, Lucy couldn’t hold it anymore. They were sitting in his apartment, the television playing something neither of them was watching. “Josh,” she said quietly. He looked up. “Hmm?” She hesitated, then forced herself to continue. “Are you still interested in this?” His forehead creased. “In what?” “In us.” That got his full attention. “What kind of question is that?” “The kind you ask when things feel different,” she replied, trying to keep her voice steady. “You’re distracted. You step out to take calls. You cancel plans. If you’re not feeling this anymore, I’d rather you just say it instead of pulling away.” For a moment, he just stared at her. Then he moved closer. “Lucy, I am very much interested,” he said firmly. “More than you know.” “Then why does it feel like you’re somewhere else lately?” He exhaled slowly. “Work has been insane. I’ve been handling a few things I didn’t want to dump on you because I know you’ve had a lot going on too.” “That’s all?” “That’s all.” He cupped her face gently. “I’m not going anywhere,” he said. “If I ever had doubts, I’d tell you. I wouldn’t fade out.” She searched his eyes. He wasn’t lying. But something still felt…hidden. “Okay,” she said finally. “I’ll trust you.” He kissed her forehead. “Good.” But later that night, when his phone buzzed again and he quickly muted it, the doubt returned. Two days later, Lucy found herself in Britney’s kitchen again. “I feel stupid,” Lucy admitted, sitting at the counter. Britney pulled her juice slowly. “Why?” “Because I asked him if he was losing interest. And he said no. He said it was work.” “And you don’t believe him?” “I don’t know,” Lucy whispered. “He feels…secretive.” Britney smiled softly. “Lucy, I have never seen someone look at a person the way Josh looks at you.” Lucy frowned. “What does that mean?” “It means that man is gone. Completely. Whatever he’s doing, it’s not about leaving.” Before Lucy could respond, Marcus walked in. “What are we discussing?” He asked cautiously. Lucy turned toward him. “Has Josh said anything to you? About…us?” Marcus didn’t miss a beat. “No.” “Nothing?” “Nothing that suggests he’s going anywhere.” Lucy studied his face. Marcus was many things, but he wasn’t a good liar. “You’re sure?” He nodded. “Lucy, if there was something wrong, I would tell you. I want you to be happy.” Britney reached across the counter and squeezed Lucy’s hand. “Stop waiting for something to break,” she said gently. “Sometimes good things are just good.” Lucy wanted to believe that. She really did. On her birthday, Lucy woke up with mixed emotions. Her phone buzzed. Josh: Happy Birthday. Dinner tonight. Dress nice. That was it. No paragraph. No emojis Just simple. Her heart sang a little. Maybe she had expected more. By afternoon, flowers arrived, from Marcus and Britney. A gift basket from her mom. A voice note from Lila. But from Josh? Silence. The doubt she had tried to silence all week grew louder. Maybe he meant what he said. Maybe he was interested. But maybe not enough. That evening, Josh picked her up looking calm. Too calm. “You look beautiful,” he said softly. “Thank you,” she replied. The drive was quiet. When they pulled up to the restaurant, Lucy frowned. “It looks closed.” “Trust me,” he said. Inside, it was dark. Completely dark. Her stomach dropped. Before she could speak, The lights burst on. “Surprise.” Her hand flew to her mouth. The entire restaurant had been transformed. Soft golden lights. Flowers. A long table filled with people she loved. Lila waving dramatically. Her mom dabbing her eyes. Marcus standing beside Britney, whose hand rested on her growing stomach. Lucy couldn’t breathe. Josh stepped in front of her. “I’m sorry,” he said gently. “For the distance. For the distraction. For making you doubt.” Tears streamed down her face. “I wasn’t pulling away,” he continued. “I was building this.” Behind them, a projector flickered to life. Lucy turned toward the screen. It was Josh. Pre-recorded. “I don’t always say things perfectly,” the video version of him began. “But there are things I need to hear.” Photos appeared, small moments over the last six months. Her laughing. Her asleep on his shoulder. Her arguing passionately about something random. “I love how you overthink,” video-Josh said. “Because it means you care deeply. I love how you pretend to be strong even when you’re scared. I love that you choose calm now, even though you once chased chaos.” Lucy covered her mouth, sobbing quietly. “I loved you quietly before you ever noticed,” the video continued. “And I don’t want to love you quietly anymore.” The video paused. On screen, Josh looked straight into the camera. “So that’s why I want to ask you something.” The screen went dark. Lucy turned slowly. Josh was already kneeling. The black velvet box in his hand. “I don’t want fireworks,” he said, voice steady but emotional. “I don’t want temporary. I want forever. I want ordinary days and difficult ones. I want time. All of it. With you.” He opened the box. “Lucy…Will you marry me?” Through tears and laughter and relief, she nodded. “Yes,” she breathed. “Yes.” The room erupted. Her mother cried openly. Lila screamed. Marcus clapped Josh on the back. Josh slid the ring onto her finger, standing to pull her into his arms. And in that moment, every doubt she had felt over the past few weeks dissolved into something stronger than certainty. She hadn’t been losing him. He had been choosing her. All along. After the intimate birthday/engagement dinner, the restaurant slowly emptied. Lila finally stopped crying long enough to hug Lucy for the fifth time. Her mother had kissed Josh’s cheeks and whispered something that made him blush. Marcus and Britney were the last to leave, Britney moving carefully while Marcus hovered like a bodyguard. “Take care of her,” Marcus said quietly to Josh. “Always,” Josh replied. When the doors finally closed and the staff began clearing the distant tables, the noise faded into something soft and private. It was just the two of them now. Lucy looked down at her hand again. The ring caught the warm light, subtle but steady, like him. “I feel stupid,” she said quietly. Josh frowned. “Why?” “I thought you were pulling away.” Her voice cracked slightly. “I thought maybe I cared more than you did.” He stepped closer immediately. “Hey,” he said gently, lifting her chin so she had to look at him. “Planning this was torture.” She let out a shaky laugh through lingering tears. “I hated not telling you,” he continued. Every time you looked at me like something was wrong, I wanted to ruin the surprise and just tell you everything.” “Why didn’t you?” “Because you deserve to feel chosen. Publicly, Loudly. Without doubt.” Her eyes filled again. “I’m sorry,” she whispered. “For doubting you.” He shook his head. “You weren’t doubting me. You were protecting yourself.” She swallowed. “I don’t want to protect myself from you,” she said softly. “I want to trust you.” Josh rested his forehead against hers. “Then trust this,” he murmured. “I am not going anywhere. Not when things are easy. Not when they’re messy. Not when we annoy each other. I’m here.” The simplicity of it settled deep inside her. No fireworks. No chaos. No competition. Just presence. She looked around the softly lit room, the scattered petals, the half melted candles, the chaos of laughter that still lingered in the air. “You really did all this?” She asked. He smiled sheepishly. “With a little help.” She laughed quietly. “I should have known Marcus was involved somehow.” Josh slid his hands into hers, careful of the ring. “I meant what I said,” he added, “I don’t want dramatic love that burns out. I want the kind that stays.” Lucy leaned into him, feeling something stronger than excitement now. Peace. And as they walked out of the restaurant together, hands intertwined, future unwritten but certain, she realized something she hadn’t understood before: Sometimes love isn’t loud when it begins. But when it stays, it becomes undeniable.
