Hell came to North Africa in June of 1940 when Mussolini declared war on the colonial governments there. The battles were fought mainly in Libya, Tunisia, and parts of Egypt. This was prior to the United States entering the war, so the British were left practically alone to fight the Italian army in a see-saw war that had battlefields and cities changing hands several times over a three-year period. In the months bridging late-1940 and early-1941, mounting losses suffered by the Italian army presaged a decline of Mussolini"s campaign in North Africa. So Germany dispatched Field Marshall Erwin Rommel and his Afrika Korps to shore up the Italian invasion of the continent.
