PILOT I stood by the window watching the cars trope in, it’s my cousin’s engagement party and my father decided to host it as his gift to her to my own peril. Don’t get me wrong, I love my family but they are too much sometimes. They keep asking silly questions and there’s always drama when they are around. My parents owns a very big mansion and I am an only child. They like to host events as much as possible because the house can get too quiet sometimes and I love it. “Amara what are you doing here?”, one of my cousins asked as he walked into my room. He’s Dave, the proud and pompous wannabe. “How many times have I asked you to knock before coming in?”, I asked him with anger written all over my face. “I keep forgetting. I have so many things on my mind to remember your silly warnings”, he said nonchalantly. I had had enough of his sickening attitude, always behaving like a proud peacock. “Then do not come into my room. You’re a twenty three years old man and I am twenty years old. I am a grown women and you are a grown man. Don’t come into my room without knocking or better still don’t come into my room at all!”, I shouted at him, shocking him. He obviously wasn’t expecting it because I have never done it to him before. “Apologize now!”, he said. I looked at him like he had grown horns. The nerves of this man! I pity whoever he ends up with. “For what?”, I asked, feeling my anger starting to resurface. “For shouting at your older cousin”, he said. “Get lost you gaslighting piece of s**t”, I said to him. I had had enough and I won’t let him ride over me. My mother, Amanda, came him hurriedly. “I heard screams. What’s going on here?”, she asked and I wondered how she heard me. The house was full with people and soft music. “Aunty, you should have heard the way Amara spoke to me. She has no respect for her elders”, he said to my mother. Mother turned to me with a questioning look. “I didn’t do it unprovoked. I’ve always warned him to knock before coming into my room. I could be naked or doing something private”, I said in my defense. “Dave, she’s right. You can’t go into a grown woman’s room without knocking. You’re not a child” Mother said and I began to smile at Dave. “And you, do not disrespect your elders. I didn’t raise you that way”, Mother said to me, causing my smile to disappear. “But mum-”, I started but she interrupted me. “No buts!”, she said and I suppressed the urge to laugh at her saying “butts” even though that’s not what she said. “Dave, stop troubling your younger sister and help receive the guest for your sister’s engagement party” Mother said to Dave and dragged him out of my room. I sighed and locked the door. I’ve had enough with my relatives always sticking their noses in my affairs. I was looking forward to the following day instead. The day I’d start working in a company that isn’t owned by my family. We are wealthy and people never appreciate my hard work because I have a wealthy family. I got tired to people doing things for me because I am the daughter of a very known man. I’ll be moving to another city and far away from my family. It took a lot of work to convince my parents to let me go. I am no longer a child and I want to experience life both the good or bad without my parents shield. In essence, I just wanted a say in my life. My cousin Amara is getting engaged and as much as I feel very happy for her, I have no interest in boys enough to want to get married. I sighed as I heard someone knocking on my door. I better go downstairs before the guests stay gossiping and spreading bad rumors. That is how they have always been. They would delve into the opportunity of slandering my family name in an instant and I know this. Reluctantly, I went downstairs to the event and saw so many guests drinking and chatting. “Hey, Amara. How are you?”, Jason said as he walked up to me. I groaned inwardly. Jason has never missed an opportunity to remind me of how much he adores me and stuff. I honestly have no feelings whatsoever for him and I try as much as possible to avoid him. “Hey Jason. Enjoy the party”, I said and started to walk away, hoping that Jason would buzz off. He didn’t. “I just had a word with your dad. He said you will be leaving the city tomorrow”, he said or asked, I don’t know. “Yes and again, enjoy the party”, I said and walked faster. From the corner of my eyes, I saw Jason following me around like a dog devoted to it’s owner. No matter what I say at this point Jason would not leave me alone. I sighed and looked forward to getting out of this city and out of Jason’s sight. After a successful party, I rushed to my room to get some sleep. I had a big day tomorrow and I needed a good night sleep at least. The next day, Sunday finally arrived and I had an early morning flight. I got up extra early and got ready. The maids help me take my bags to the car and I went to my parents room. I knocked and went in. My parents were sitting on the sofa and I knew they had be waiting for me to come to them. “Mom, Dad, I’m ready to go”, I said to them. Gosh, I’d miss them terribly. “I know we didn’t get enough time to chat yesterday because of the party but I’m sure you know what I’d say”, Father said as he spread his arms open. I could see the tears in Mother’s eyes and I rushed into the hug dad offered. I don’t know what I’d find out there, but whatever it is, I’m stronger
