ESCAPE Before I could think of how to respond the car came to an halt, dangerously close to me. I immediately felt lightheaded and started to feel faint. “Hey, what’s wrong with you? Can’t you look at where you’re going?”, the driver came out and shouted at me. He was dressed in an uniform and seems like he was a chauffeur. I quickly regained my sense and rushed up to him. “Sir please we have to leave here. Some men are after me”, I pleaded with him. “I’m sorry ma’m but I am not the police. I’m driving my boss to an important meeting please stay out of the road”, he said to me and started to enter the car. I couldn’t let those men catch up with me after what I just did in there. Out of desperation, I began to hit the wind shield. “Are you crazy? Please stop that before my boss comes out. Get out of here”, the driver said to me but I refused to stop. His boss finally called out to him and he walked towards the passenger side to speak with him. After a couple of seconds, the driver emerged. “Get in”, he said and I rushed in without knowing who they were. Immediately I got into the back seat I saw the most beautiful man I had ever seen in my life. He had a strong body build and an intense gaze. His blue eyes linger on my amber ones and all I could see there was surprise and irritation. “You are a crazy woman. We could be worse than those men chasing you, you know?”, he said to me with a husky voice. With this face and that voice, I wouldn’t mind if he took me far away and nobody ever found me. “I’m sorry. I just wanted to escape. I didn’t mean to hit your wind shield”, I said to him hoping and praying he’d understand. “Well, that’s none of my business. I have to be at a very important meeting now and I’ll drop you off my the police station”, he said to him and tapped his driver’s shoulder. “Thank you very much. I am grateful and I’d be honored to return the favor”, I said with gratitude. “I do not want to sleep with you ma’m”, he said nonchalantly. “Neither do I”, I retorted. Yes he helped me and probably saved my life but I am no w***e. “You really have attitude for someone who was begging a while ago”, he said with an upset expression. “I don’t want to fight with you. I’m grateful to you but I am no w***e”, I said to him. “Oh really? Then why are men chasing you?”, he asked sarcastically. “I did not go to them for p**********n. I went for a job interview. Turns out they’re fake and are kidnappers”, I said to him. “No, they are drug dealers. A lot of them recently moved to this city, New York, and some girls have gone missing”, he said with a frown. “Oh, I didn’t know. I got the job online from a good website”, I said to him. “Well, they are drug dealers. They can pay any website to advertise their job opportunities”, he said to me. “I had no idea”, I said to him. “Of course you don’t. You only know how to talk back to someone who saved your life”, he said back. “I’m sorry about that and thank you once again. I’ll forever be indebted to you. My name is Amara, what’s your name?”, I asked the grumpy man. “Ben”, he said and picked up his phone. Soon, the driver stopped in front of the police station and I alighted. From the corner of my eyes, I could see Ben coming out of the car as well. “I thought you said you had an important meeting?”, I asked him. “Well, I’m already late. What’s ten minutes more?”, he asked and walked into the police station. I trailed behind him and observed how he walked with grace. He took few long strides and before I knew it, he was out of my sight. I ran into the building to catch up with him. I panted as I stood next to him. I have not been this stressed in my entire existence than I am today. “Where’s your boss?”, Ben asked and officer. “He’s inside”, the officer replied and Ben walked to the direction of the office. I, of course, followed him in. We got inside and I shared my encounter with the inspector. He nodded from time to time and took notes. Few minutes later we were done and Ben walked out of the police station, heading towards his car. “Hey, Ben!”, I called as I ran after him but he ignored me. “Ben!”, I called again as I watched him get into his car. I rushed towards the window at his side of the car and knocked. “What else do you want?”, he asked, clearly tired of me. “I just wanted to say thank you again. Here’s my number in case you need my help”, I said and have him my card. “I’m not interested in pay back. Go home and freshen up”, he said to me but I wasn’t giving up. “Just take it. You might not need to call me but take it”, I insisted. He sighed and took the card from me, throwing it on the car seat. “Anything else?”, he asked. “No, you can leave”, I said to him, moving away from the car. “Go home and get some rest. You look like you haven’t lifted a finger in your entire life and here you are running away from drug dealers”, he said to me. “I’ll go home. The officer will drive me home. Don’t worry about me”, I said to him with a sweet smile. His frown deepened and he signaled his driver to start moving. The rolled the window up and they drove off leaving me standing there. I watched the car as they drove off and wondered what time of man Ben was; annoying and egotistical. The officer called out to me and I walked up to him.
