Episode Three
Dirk's POV
The just-risen sun shone softly on the city streets, bringing with it a flurry of early-morning activity. Day Dappled sun shone through the trees, creating mysterious shadows. The blue sky was dotted with fluffy white clouds that drifted lazily in the gentle breeze.
The light of dawn seeped into my room. The dawn chorus of melodic birdsong drifted in. The rising sun cast a rosy hue across the morning sky. Golden fingers of sunlight lit up the scene.
"Hey Get up", my sis, Dawn shouted, she walked to me and yanked the bedcover off me
"Oh!, stop", I groaned into my pillow, I had a busy day yesterday, I wanted to sleep
"Get your ass up", Dawn commanded, "Dad and mum are here for breakfast", she added
"What!", I exclaimed, "I want to sleep more", I mumbled.
I live alone but Dawn was here for a visit, and now Mum and Dad too, they never said they will be here when I met then the say before.
"Hey Dirk, get up, dad wants you down", she said and pulled me up then pushed me into the bathroom, "I'll be back in five", she added and took her leave
"Back?, for what?", I asked myself as I walked into the bathroom.
I took my bath reluctantly then dragged my feet back into my room, I wore a black suit and a white shirt, I picked up the files on my bedside table and walked down the stairs
"Morning dad", I greeted as I walked into the dining room
"Hey Dirk", that was my mum
"Hi mum, you didn't tell me you will be here this morning", I said, hoping they will tell me what was wrong this time.
I knew they only come for breakfast when they have something to say.
"Let's eat first, I'm famished", My dad, Paxton said
He had a smoky grey eye, it was obvious he was over 50, he had a shiny goatee and a manly, peppered stubble, his eyes were a dazzle with wonder over a friendly smile.
We ate in silence, the only thing making noise was our cutleries.
"So dad, I'm off to work", I said but he raised up his hand, a gesture telling me to wait.
He sipped his glass of water, then wiped his mouth with the table cloth, he cleared his throat, "Your mum and I need to talk to you", he said and I took my seat
"Is everything okay?", I asked, his eyes looked pale
"Uhm. yes .. everything is okay", my dad said after drawing back for a while
"So, tell me", I urged him
"Dirk, you're getting married", my dad announced
I didn't know if I heard him right, but who the hell is getting married, "Married?", I asked
"Yes, Dirk, you're getting married", he repeated
"Dad", I said and sigh, "This is a joke right?", I asked, it must be just a joke
"No Dirk, I'm being serious, you're getting married", he confirmed
"But dad.."
"Dirk, please, just listen to your dad", my mum said
I still couldn't take it, getting married?, all of a sudden to God knows who, "Dad, why will you get me married, just like that, I mean I don't even know who I'm getting married to", I mumbled
"Dirk it's just for two years", my mum said
"Mum, I don't care if it is a month or a day, I'm not getting married to just anyone, why are you doing this?", I asked, giving them a hostile glare
"We're doing this for you", my dad replied
"For me?", I asked, my eyes widened, "I don't need to get married dad", I added
"Dirk, we can't just keep looking at you, we've given you enough time but you've not given us the right response to our wait", he said
"What do you mean dad?", I asked, I was confused
"Dirk, remember your dad and I had to adopt you, that was because we couldn't get a son who would be the heir of everything we own", my mum started, taking me back to my childhood which I wanted to forget.
I was adopted when I was just 8, although no one knows the secret of being adopted by them, I was seen as their biological son, and Paxton and Sarah treated me like one, I knew I was loved but not making decisions for me.
"We were terrified when we couldn't get a son, we went for medical check ups and it was all positive, then we adopted you", she said and sigh, "Dirk, we don't want you to go through the same humiliation as us, just get married and get a heir", she added
"But mum, you said you will give me time", I replied her.
They promised to give me time to look for Daisy. Daisy was the woman I love, she was my bestfriend and I grew up loving her, although I had lost contact with her.
"We've given you enough time", my dad said and spranged up, "We can't keep waiting, we're doing this for you, we want the best for you, you can't keep looking for your friend, we've given you enough time to do that, not anymore", dad added
"But.. but dad, I can just adopt like you did", I said, I knew it wasn't right to say that but I just didn't want to get married to anyone. I don't think anyone could take Daisy's place in my heart.
"We won't allow you do that", my dad said, "This is the best choice and this marriage is a contracted marriage, just get a son and we will call it off", he added
"Dad... I can't do this", I stood on my decision, "I can't do this", I repeated
My mum walked up to me, she placed her hand on my shoulder and made me sit, "Dirk, you're not getting younger, I want you to know we made this decision for you, we don't want you to go through the same humiliation like we did", she sigh, "You're going to be married for just two years, as long as you can get a heir, you'll be free, Just get a heir and you can keep looking for Daisy", she added
"But mum..."
"Dirk, you need to do this, for yourself, for us and for the company's future, your dad has gotten you the best wife, I'm sure you'll like her", mum said
"This is cruel mum, this is just took cruel", I yelled and spranged up, I kept pacing in the room, all I wished for won't be happening, finding the one I love and living the rest of my life with her, I couldn't accept that I had to forget about Daisy, I couldn't take the fact that I had to birth with someone else and not Daisy, my heart ached from this, my whole body shook as tears rolled down my eyes, I tried to hold it back but it wouldn't stop rolling down.
My mum walked up to me, she pulled me into her arms and hugged me tightly, for the first time in long years, I missed my biological mum, sometimes I felt having an heir wouldn't be a problem if I had my parents.
"Just two years Dirk and everything is over", mum said, she knew I had no choice, she knew I couldn't say no.
I nodded, then picked up my suit jacket and rushed up the stairs, I entered my room and locked the door behind me.
I paced in my room, I couldn't do anything to stop this contracted marriage, I knew it was important to get an heir but not with a stranger.
My anger grew, my eyes were burning and I could feel it, I punched the flower vase beside me and it came crackling down, I roared in anger.
I walked up to my working table, a picture of Daisy stood right on the table, I picked it up and smiled but it was accompanied with tears.
I think the picture to my chest and sat down, leaning against the wall, I rested my head on the wall, different thoughts ran through my head, my hand was cut and the blood dropped down, staining the while tiled floor
"Hey Dirk, open this door, open up", my dad said, knocking my door but I didn't say a word.
I wanted to be alone, I didn't want to talk to anyone, my heart ached, my body shook as I let out a whimper.
I looked at the picture again, "I will find you", I said to it and brought up my knees to my chest, then rest my head on it, "I will find you", I said again.
