A REPUTATION IN RUIN

1017 Words
The Monday morning sun rose over Mambwe University, but for Daniel Chanda, there was nothing beautiful about the day. He stood outside the university gates, staring at the campus where he had once walked proudly. Only a week earlier, students had greeted him with smiles and handshakes. Now, the same faces turned away the moment they saw him. Some whispered behind his back. Others openly pointed at him. "There he is." "That's the guy." "I can't believe he did something like that." Daniel lowered his head and continued walking. Every word cut deeper than the last. Inside the administration building, members of the disciplinary committee waited. At the center of the room sat the Dean, several lecturers, a student representative, and the university legal officer. Daniel took a seat. Moments later, Vanessa entered. She wore a long-sleeved blouse that covered the scratches she had made on herself. Her face carried just enough sadness to convince anyone looking at her that she was still traumatized. The Dean cleared his throat. "This hearing is to establish the facts surrounding the incident that occurred last Friday." He looked at Vanessa. "You may begin." Vanessa took a deep breath before tears filled her eyes. "I trusted Daniel. We were working on our assignment together. After leaving the library, he suggested we use the shortcut. He suddenly confessed that he had feelings for me. I told him I loved someone else, and he became aggressive. He grabbed me and tried to force himself on me." She paused, pretending to wipe away tears. "I screamed... because I thought he was going to destroy my life." The room fell silent. Several committee members nodded sympathetically. The Dean turned toward Daniel. "What is your response?" Daniel slowly stood. "Everything she said is false." "Did you meet her after the library?" "Yes." "Did you use the shortcut?" "Yes." "But I never touched her." He explained everything—from her confession to her sudden change in behavior and the moment she grabbed his shirt before screaming. The committee listened politely. Yet Daniel could already see disbelief written across their faces. One lecturer finally spoke. "Do you have any evidence to support your claims?" Daniel hesitated. "No." Vanessa quietly lowered her head, as if reliving painful memories. The contrast was obvious. One person appeared heartbroken. The other appeared defensive. When the meeting ended, the Dean sighed. "Until investigations are completed, your suspension remains in effect." Daniel nodded silently and walked out. Outside the building, dozens of students were waiting. The moment he appeared, someone shouted, "Predator!" Another student threw a plastic bottle at his feet. Someone else recorded everything on their phone. Daniel ignored them and kept walking. He refused to give them the reaction they wanted. --- Across campus, Naomi watched everything from a distance. Her heart ached. She wanted to run after Daniel. She wanted to hold his hand. But fear stopped her. What if everyone else was right? What if she was defending the wrong person? She hated herself for doubting him. Yet she couldn't ignore the accusations either. Grace walked beside her. "You still love him." Naomi nodded. "I do." "Then stop listening to strangers and start looking for the truth." Naomi looked at her friend. "How?" Grace smiled slightly. "People who lie usually make mistakes." --- That afternoon, Vanessa received dozens of supportive messages. Her social media followers had doubled in just a few days. Local bloggers wanted interviews. Women's organizations praised her bravery. She enjoyed every moment. As she scrolled through the comments, she smiled. "They all believe me." Her roommate, Lydia, looked up from her bed. "Don't you feel guilty?" Vanessa frowned. "For what?" "If Daniel is innocent..." Vanessa interrupted. "Innocent people don't reject me." Lydia stared at her in shock. "So this is revenge?" Vanessa stood. "You wouldn't understand." She grabbed her bag and left the room before Lydia could ask another question. For the first time, Lydia began questioning everything. --- Meanwhile, Daniel returned to his small apartment. His father was waiting outside. The old mechanic looked exhausted. Gray hairs seemed to have appeared overnight. Without saying a word, he embraced his son. Daniel could no longer hold back his emotions. "I'm sorry, Dad." His father pulled away. "Don't apologize if you did nothing wrong." "But nobody believes me." "I do." Those three words nearly brought Daniel to tears. His father placed a rough hand on his shoulder. "The truth has survived longer than lies throughout history." "It may take time..." "But truth never dies." Daniel nodded. For the first time in days, he felt a small spark of hope. --- That evening, Grace visited the university security office under the excuse of asking about a lost student ID. While waiting, she noticed dozens of surveillance monitors covering different parts of the campus. An idea suddenly crossed her mind. She quietly asked the officer, "Do your cameras cover the pathway between the Business Building and the Science Block?" The officer nodded. "Most areas are recorded twenty-four hours a day." Grace's heartbeat quickened. "What about last Friday evening?" The officer shrugged. "The recordings are archived." Grace thanked him and quickly left. As she walked outside, excitement filled her chest. If the cameras had been working... Then somewhere inside the university... The truth still existed. She immediately reached for her phone. Daniel answered after the third ring. "Hello?" "I think I found something." Daniel's voice became hopeful for the first time since the incident. "What is it?" "The security cameras." Daniel froze. "You mean..." "They might have recorded everything." For several seconds, neither of them spoke. Then Daniel whispered, "This could change everything." Grace looked toward the administration building. "It could." "But only if we can get the footage before someone deletes it." Far away, Vanessa stood near the library entrance. She watched Grace end the phone call. A feeling she had not experienced since childhood crept into her heart. Fear. Because deep inside... She suddenly remembered something she had completely overlooked. The security cameras. And if they had captured the truth... Her perfect lie was about to begin falling apart.
