Daniel barely slept that night.
Grace's words echoed through his mind.
"The security cameras."
For the first time since his suspension, he felt something stronger than fear.
Hope.
If the cameras had recorded what happened on the shortcut, then his nightmare could finally come to an end.
But hope came with another question.
Would the footage still be there?
---
Across campus, Vanessa woke up in a cold sweat.
She sat upright in bed, breathing heavily.
"The cameras..."
She remembered walking Daniel through the shortcut. She had been so focused on her revenge that she had ignored the surveillance camera fixed high on the wall.
"What if it saw everything?"
Her hands began to shake.
She quickly dressed and rushed out of the hostel before breakfast.
Her destination was the university security office.
---
Meanwhile, Grace met Naomi outside the library.
Naomi looked exhausted.
"I haven't slept."
"Neither have I," Grace replied.
"I think Daniel was telling the truth."
Naomi looked at her in surprise.
"What makes you say that?"
Grace glanced around before lowering her voice.
"The shortcut has surveillance cameras."
Naomi's eyes widened.
"You mean..."
"There may be video evidence."
Naomi covered her mouth.
"If that's true..."
"It could clear Daniel's name."
For the first time in days, Naomi smiled.
It was small.
But it was real.
---
Vanessa arrived at the security office trying to remain calm.
The elderly security officer looked up.
"Good morning."
"Good morning," Vanessa replied politely.
"I came because... I was wondering whether the cameras near the Business Building are working."
The officer nodded.
"They work perfectly."
Her heart skipped a beat.
"I see."
She forced a smile.
"I was just curious."
As she turned to leave, she overheard another officer speaking.
"The recordings are automatically backed up every evening."
Vanessa froze.
Backed up?
That meant deleting one copy wouldn't erase the evidence.
Fear tightened around her chest.
She walked away as quickly as possible.
---
Later that afternoon, Daniel received a call from the university administration.
"The disciplinary committee will meet again tomorrow."
Daniel thanked them before hanging up.
He immediately called Grace.
"They've scheduled another hearing."
Grace smiled.
"Perfect."
"I've also spoken to a law student. He says the committee has the authority to request surveillance footage."
Daniel felt his heartbeat quicken.
"So tomorrow..."
"We may finally know the truth."
---
Unknown to them, Vanessa was already planning her next move.
She met her cousin, Kelvin, at a small café outside the university.
Kelvin noticed her nervous expression.
"What's wrong?"
"I made a mistake."
"What happened?"
She leaned closer.
"There are security cameras."
Kelvin frowned.
"So?"
"They may have recorded everything."
His face became serious.
"Can the footage be deleted?"
"I don't know."
Kelvin thought for a moment.
"If someone gets that video, you're finished."
Vanessa looked down.
"I know."
Kelvin sighed.
"Then make sure nobody gets it first."
---
That evening, Naomi finally gathered the courage to visit Daniel.
When he opened the door, both of them stood silently.
Neither knew what to say.
Finally, Naomi spoke.
"I'm sorry."
Daniel looked into her eyes.
"For what?"
"For doubting you."
"You were scared."
"I should have trusted the man I love."
Daniel smiled sadly.
"I don't blame you."
Tears filled Naomi's eyes.
"I never stopped loving you."
Without another word, Daniel embraced her.
For several moments, neither of them spoke.
Sometimes silence said everything words could not.
"I promise," Naomi whispered.
"I'm going to fight beside you until everyone knows the truth."
Daniel nodded.
"Thank you."
For the first time since the accusations, he no longer felt alone.
---
The following morning, the disciplinary committee gathered once again.
The room was unusually quiet.
The Dean looked around the table before speaking.
"Before we continue, new information has come to our attention."
Vanessa felt her stomach tighten.
The Dean continued.
"It has been confirmed that surveillance cameras cover the area where the incident occurred."
The room fell silent.
Daniel slowly looked toward Vanessa.
She avoided his eyes.
The university legal officer stood.
"We have officially requested the footage from the security department."
Daniel closed his eyes in relief.
Naomi smiled.
Grace quietly squeezed Daniel's shoulder.
Vanessa felt her heartbeat pounding against her chest.
She knew one thing.
If the recording showed the truth...
Everything she had built would collapse.
The sympathy.
The interviews.
The praise.
Every lie.
The Dean looked around the room.
"The footage should be available by tomorrow morning."
Daniel breathed deeply.
Tomorrow.
After days of humiliation...
After losing friends...
After watching his reputation fall apart...
Tomorrow could be the day everything changed.
Outside, dark clouds gathered once again above Mambwe University.
But unlike the previous storm...
This one wasn't bringing lies.
It was bringing the truth.
End of Chapter Three.
