The laughter behind me picked up again almost immediately, the warriors returning to their drinks and stories as if nothing had happened. I didn’t look back. I pushed through the crowd, scanning the room for Lexi. The great hall had grown even louder since the party started. The band was playing faster now, the music echoing through the high wooden beams while wolves crowded the dance floor, stomping their boots and clapping along to the rhythm. Normally I loved nights like this. Tonight the noise felt suffocating. I searched the room again. Lexi’s dark curls were usually easy to spot in a crowd, but the hall was packed shoulder to shoulder.
