HIS POSSESSION
Chapter Nine: A QUIET DECISION
Wednesday evening arrived beneath a sky painted with shades of violet and gold.
By now, Adrian no longer questioned where his evenings ended.
The decision had quietly made itself.
Le ChĂąteau.
It had become as familiar to him as his own office.
As predictable as sunrise.
And, strangelyâŠ
He didnât mind.
The hostess greeted him with the warmth reserved for regular guests.
âWelcome back, Mr. De Luca.â
âGood evening.â
âTable nine is ready.â
âThank you.â
There was no ceremony anymore.
No surprise.
Only familiarity.
As Adrian walked toward his table, he noticed Ethan speaking with Chef Marcel near the kitchen.
The chef laughed heartily at something Ethan had said before shaking his head and returning to work.
Ethan turned.
Their eyes met.
A genuine smile appeared on Ethanâs face.
âGood evening, Mr. De Luca.â
âGood evening.â
âIâll be with you in just a moment.â
âIâll be here.â
When Ethan arrived at the table, he set a glass of water down before Adrian asked.
âI remembered.â
Adrian looked at the glass.
âYou did.â
âYou always ask for still water before ordering.â
âI suppose I do.â
Ethan grinned.
âI figured Iâd save us both a step.â
It was such a small gesture.
So ordinary.
Yet Adrian found himself unexpectedly pleased.
Being rememberedâŠ
Felt different.
Dinner passed comfortably.
Their conversations remained brief, woven naturally between Ethanâs responsibilities.
âChef says youâre becoming difficult.â
Adrian looked up.
âDifficult?â
âYou never order from the menu anymore.â
âAnd whose fault is that?â
Ethan laughed.
âI created a monster.â
âA predictable one.â
âIâll take that as a compliment.â
âYou should.â
For a moment, they shared a quiet smile before Ethan excused himself to attend another table.
Neither of them noticed Noah watching from across the dining room.
âYouâre smiling.â
Ethan looked confused.
âWhat?â
âWhen you talk to table nine.â
âI smile at everyone.â
âNot like that.â
Ethan frowned.
âI donât know what youâre talking about.â
Noah chuckled.
âIf you say so.â
Later that evening, Adrian watched Ethan help close out several tables.
An elderly gentleman insisted on leaving a handwritten note with the bill.
Ethan unfolded it after the guests departed.
âThank you for treating my wife so kindly tonight. She hasnât smiled this much since leaving the hospital.â
Ethan stood quietly for a moment.
Then he folded the note with care and slipped it into his apron pocket.
Not for attention.
Not to show anyone.
Simply because it meant something.
Adrian looked away.
Some people collected expensive watches.
Others collected rare paintings.
EthanâŠ
Collected moments.
As dessert arrived, Adrian spoke.
âYou enjoy your work.â
âI do.â
âWhy?â
Ethan thought for a moment.
âBecause people remember how theyâre treated.â
He smiled thoughtfully.
âThey might forget what they ordered.â
âTheyâll forget the music.â
âTheyâll probably even forget my face.â
âBut theyâll remember how someone made them feel.â
Adrian considered those words carefully.
âYou believe that.â
âI do.â
âAnd has anyone ever made you feel unforgettable?â
The question slipped out before Adrian could stop it.
Ethan blinked in surprise.
He looked down for a moment before answering honestly.
âI donât know.â
Then he smiled.
âMaybe one day.â
Something tightened in Adrianâs chest.
He wasnât sure why.
Outside the restaurant, the evening air had grown cooler.
Luca was waiting beside the sedan.
As Adrian approached, he spoke without looking away from the restaurant.
âLuca.â
âYes, Boss?â
âI want you to do something.â
âOf course.â
Adrian remained silent for several moments.
He knew exactly what he was about to ask.
And he knew that, once spokenâŠ
There would be no pretending this was simple curiosity anymore.
âWhen you have timeâŠâ
He paused.
ââŠFind out a little about Ethan Brooks.â
Luca looked at him carefully.
âHow much would you like to know?â
Adrian thought about the question.
Everything.
The answer formed instantly.
Instead, he said,
âOnly the basics.â
Luca nodded.
âI understand.â
âAnd LucaâŠâ
âYes?â
âNo one is to approach him.â
âOf course.â
âNo one is to interfere with his life.â
âIâll make sure of it.â
Adrian finally looked toward him.
âI simplyâŠâ
He searched for the right words.
ââŠwant to know who he is.â
Luca inclined his head.
âAs you wish.â
The car pulled away from Le ChĂąteau.
Adrian watched the restaurant disappear into the distance.
For days, he had told himself that knowing Ethanâs first nameâŠ
Then his surnameâŠ
Had been enough.
Tonight, he admitted something different.
He wanted to know the man behind the smile.
It was a small decision.
A quiet one.
But some decisionsâŠ
Changed everything.
