FAMILIAR FACES 👀

HIS POSSESSION Chapter Seventeen: FAMILIAR FACES Wednesday evenings settled gently over Manhattan. Outside, the air had grown noticeably cooler. The first hints of autumn painted the trees lining the streets in shades of amber and gold. Inside Le Château, however… Warmth greeted everyone who stepped through its doors. The scent of freshly baked bread drifted from the kitchen. The piano filled the dining room with quiet melodies. Laughter rose and faded between conversations. For Adrian… Walking into Le Château no longer felt like entering a restaurant. It felt… Familiar. “Good evening, Mr. De Luca.” The hostess welcomed him with her usual smile. “Good evening.” She accepted his coat before adding, “Chef Marcel says he hopes you’re hungry.” Adrian raised an eyebrow. “Should I be concerned?” She laughed. “I think he’s trying to redeem yesterday’s apple tart.” “I never said it wasn’t good.” “I’ll let him know.” As Adrian approached table nine, Ethan was already waiting. “Good evening.” “Good evening, Ethan.” “The chef has been experimenting all afternoon.” “So I’ve heard.” Ethan sighed dramatically. “He has informed the entire kitchen that tonight…” “…you are his official taste tester.” “I don’t remember accepting that position.” “I’m afraid he never asked.” Adrian chuckled softly. “I suspected as much.” Dinner began as it always did. Comfortably. Without ceremony. As Ethan poured water, Noah walked past carrying a tray. “Evening, Mr. De Luca.” “Good evening.” Noah nodded toward Ethan. “Try not to let him work too hard.” “I’ll do my best.” “I heard that,” Ethan called after him. “You were supposed to!” The exchange earned a quiet laugh from nearby guests. Adrian watched them with quiet amusement. There was an easy friendship between the staff. One built over years. Not long afterward, Chef Marcel emerged from the kitchen carrying a small plate. “I refuse to wait until dessert.” Ethan smiled knowingly. “You changed it.” “I did.” Chef Marcel placed the apple tart in front of Adrian. “More cinnamon.” Adrian picked up his fork. The chef folded his arms expectantly. After a thoughtful bite, Adrian nodded. “You were right.” Chef Marcel’s face lit up. “I knew it!” Ethan laughed. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen him this happy.” “He takes dessert very seriously.” “As he should.” The three men shared a quiet smile before Chef Marcel hurried back to the kitchen. As dinner service continued, Ethan found himself pulled toward another table. A young father struggled to calm his restless daughter, who couldn’t have been older than five. Tears welled in her eyes as she clutched her napkin. Without hesitation, Ethan knelt beside her chair. “May I tell you a secret?” The little girl sniffled. “…Okay.” “I heard Chef Marcel made chocolate mousse tonight.” Her eyes widened. “He did?” “He only gives it to very brave little girls.” She considered this carefully. “What if I’m only a little brave?” Ethan smiled. “Then I think he’ll make an exception.” A tiny smile appeared on her face. Within moments, she was giggling. Across the room, her parents mouthed a silent, “Thank you.” Ethan simply nodded and returned to work. Adrian had watched the entire exchange. There had been no performance. No audience. Just kindness. Again. Later that evening, Adrian spoke quietly as Ethan cleared away another plate. “Does that happen often?” “What?” “You making frightened children smile.” Ethan looked toward the little girl, now happily eating dessert. “I suppose.” “You make it look easy.” “It usually isn’t.” “No?” Ethan shook his head. “Sometimes people just need someone to meet them where they are.” Adrian repeated the words silently. “Meet them where they are.” It sounded simple. Yet it carried more wisdom than many business meetings he’d attended. Near the end of dinner, Noah approached Adrian’s table with fresh bread. “Ethan’s helping Chef Marcel for a minute.” “I see.” For a moment, Noah hesitated. Then he smiled. “You know…” “…it’s nice having you around.” Adrian looked genuinely surprised. “I’m only a customer.” “You stopped feeling like one a while ago.” Before Adrian could answer, Noah was already hurrying back toward another table. The words lingered. You stopped feeling like one. A few minutes later, Ethan returned. “I’m sorry for the wait.” “There wasn’t one.” “You’ve been talking to Noah.” “I have.” Ethan smiled knowingly. “I hope he wasn’t causing trouble.” “He welcomed me.” Ethan paused. “He did?” “He said it was nice having me around.” For a brief second… Ethan’s expression softened. “I’m glad.” “So am I.” Neither of them spoke for a moment. Because somehow… The words meant more than either expected. Closing time arrived. The last guests slowly filtered out into the cool autumn night. As Adrian prepared to leave, Chef Marcel called from the kitchen. “Mr. De Luca!” Adrian turned. “If I ruin another dessert…” “…I expect your honesty.” Adrian inclined his head. “You have my word.” Chef Marcel laughed. “Good.” “You’ve become one of us now.” The statement was made lightly. Almost as a joke. Yet Adrian found himself smiling all the way to the entrance. Outside, Luca opened the car door. “You seem pleased.” “I am.” “What happened tonight?” Adrian looked back toward the warm lights of Le Château. “I realized something.” “And?” He watched Ethan through the window, laughing with Noah as Chef Marcel pretended to scold them both. “For the first time in a long time…” “…I wasn’t treated like someone important.” Luca frowned slightly. “You’ve never liked being treated differently.” “No.” Adrian’s smile remained. “And tonight…” “I wasn’t.” The sedan disappeared into the quiet Manhattan streets. Inside Le Château, Ethan gathered the last of the menus. He glanced toward table nine. The chair was empty once more. Yet somehow… It no longer felt like the chair belonged to a customer. It belonged to someone they expected to see tomorrow. Someone who had quietly become part of the rhythm of their little restaurant. And without anyone making the decision… Le Château had begun making room for Adrian De Luca. End of Chapter Seventeen 🖤
