HIS POSSESSION
Chapter 28; BEHIND THE GATES
The gunshot had barely faded when Adrian disappeared through the front door.
Ethan remained where he was.
For several seconds, he couldnât move.
His heart was beating so hard it hurt.
He looked toward the entrance.
Then toward the windows.
Then back at the door.
âStay here.â
That had been Adrianâs instruction.
Ethan had every intention of obeying it.
For approximately ten seconds.
Then shouting came from outside.
Ethanâs eyes widened.
He moved toward the window.
One of Adrianâs men hurried across the courtyard, speaking urgently into his phone.
Another stood near the gate.
Ethan couldnât see Adrian.
That frightened him more than the gunshot.
He turned toward the door.
âNo.â
He stopped himself.
Adrian had specifically told him to stay inside.
And for once, Ethan decided that arguing with the most intimidating man heâd ever met could wait.
He stepped away from the window.
Then something caught his attention.
A photograph.
It sat on a small table beside the hallway.
Ethan hadnât noticed it earlier.
He shouldnât touch it.
He knew that.
He touched it anyway.
The photograph was old.
Adrian was younger.
Much younger.
Maybe eighteen or nineteen.
And standing beside him was a woman Ethan didnât recognize.
She had Adrianâs eyes.
Ethan stared.
His fingers moved toward the photograph.
âCurious?â
Ethan nearly jumped out of his skin.
He spun around.
Adrian stood several feet behind him.
Ethan immediately dropped his hand.
âYou move too quietly.â
Adrian glanced at the photograph.
âSo Iâve been told.â
Ethan looked between him and the picture.
âWho is she?â
Adrianâs expression changed.
It was subtle.
But Ethan had become annoyingly good at noticing those tiny changes in Adrian.
Something had closed.
âSomeone from a long time ago.â
âThatâs not an answer.â
âItâs the one youâre getting.â
Ethan folded his arms.
âYouâre incredibly frustrating.â
âAnd yet youâre still here.â
Ethan opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Adrianâs lips twitched.
Ethan glared.
âDonât.â
âI didnât say anything.â
âYou were about to.â
âPerhaps.â
Ethan looked at the photograph again.
âShe looks like you.â
Adrianâs amusement disappeared.
âShe was my sister.â
Ethanâs gaze returned to him.
Was.
He understood immediately.
âOh.â
Adrian looked away.
Ethanâs voice softened.
âIâm sorry.â
Adrian said nothing.
Ethan considered leaving the subject alone.
Then he noticed the scar running along Adrianâs wrist.
Heâd seen it before.
But never this clearly.
âDid that happen because of them?â
Adrian looked at his wrist.
âNo.â
âThen how?â
Adrian met his eyes.
âYouâre asking too many questions.â
âYouâre hiding too many things.â
The silence between them stretched.
Then Adrian walked toward him.
Ethanâs body instinctively stiffened.
Adrian stopped directly in front of him.
Close.
Too close.
But this time, Ethan didnât step back.
Adrian lowered his voice.
âYou want answers?â
âYes.â
âThen understand something first.â
His gaze dropped briefly to Ethanâs mouth.
Ethan noticed.
His breath caught.
Adrianâs eyes returned to his.
âAnswers come with consequences.â
Ethan swallowed.
âAre you threatening me?â
âNo.â
Adrian leaned slightly closer.
âIâm warning you.â
Ethanâs heart thudded.
âThereâs a difference?â
âWith me?â
A pause.
âAlways.â
Ethan stared at him.
There was something about the way Adrian looked at him tonight.
Something Ethan couldnât explain.
Something that made his skin feel too warm.
He forced himself to look away.
âThen start with the easiest question.â
Adrian waited.
âWhy were you outside Le Château?â
Adrianâs jaw tightened.
Ethan smiled faintly.
âSee? Simple.â
âNot really.â
âYou were waiting for me.â
âI was.â
The answer came so easily that Ethan stopped.
âWhat?â
Adrian didnât look away.
âI was waiting for you.â
Ethanâs smile disappeared.
âWhy?â
Adrian was silent.
âAdrian.â
âI wanted to see you.â
Ethanâs heart stopped.
Just for a second.
âWhat?â
Adrian seemed almost irritated with himself for saying it.
âI wanted to see you.â
Ethan stared at him.
âBut why?â
Adrianâs expression softened.
Barely.
âThatâs what Iâm trying to understand.â
Neither spoke.
Ethanâs pulse was suddenly everywhere.
He had expected Adrian to say something logical.
Something dismissive.
Instead, heâd admitted that heâd gone looking for him.
Not because of business.
Not because Ethan was working.
Because he wanted to see him.
Ethan stepped backward.
Adrianâs eyes followed him.
âThis is becoming complicated.â
âIt was complicated before tonight.â
âNot like this.â
Adrianâs gaze sharpened.
âLike what?â
Ethan couldnât answer.
Because he didnât know.
He only knew that standing this close to Adrian felt different now.
And that scared him.
A knock sounded at the door.
They both turned.
One of Adrianâs men entered.
âSir.â
Adrianâs expression immediately became colder.
âWhat?â
âWe found the vehicle.â
âWhere?â
âTwo streets from here.â
Adrianâs eyes narrowed.
âAnyone inside?â
âNo.â
âPlates?â
âCloned.â
Adrianâs jaw flexed.
âAnything else?â
The man hesitated.
âWe found this.â
He placed something on the table.
A phone.
Ethan stared at it.
Adrianâs eyes moved to him.
âWhat?â
The man looked between them.
âIt was inside the vehicle.â
Adrian walked over and picked it up.
The screen was already open.
One photograph filled it.
Ethan.
Standing outside Le Château.
Taken earlier that evening.
Ethanâs blood ran cold.
âThatâs me.â
Adrian didnât answer.
Ethan stepped closer.
There were several more photographs.
Ethan leaving work.
Ethan buying groceries.
Ethan walking down his street.
Ethan entering his apartment building.
Ethan froze.
Someone had been watching him.
For how long?
âHow long?â Ethan whispered.
Adrianâs gaze remained on the screen.
âWe donât know.â
Ethanâs breathing became shallow.
âSomeone has been following me.â
Adrian finally looked at him.
âYes.â
âAnd you knew?â
âNo.â
Ethanâs expression hardened.
âBut you suspected.â
Adrian didnât deny it.
Ethan stepped away.
âYou knew something was wrong.â
âI knew someone was interested in you.â
âAnd you didnât tell me?â
âI didnât have enough information.â
âYou could have told me!â
Adrianâs voice sharpened.
âAnd what would you have done?â
Ethan stopped.
âNothing.â
âExactly.â
âThatâs not your decision!â
Adrian moved toward him.
âSomeone fired a weapon at you last night.â
âI know!â
âAnd tonight we found photographs of you in a car belonging to the people responsible.â
âI KNOW!â
Ethanâs voice cracked.
The room fell silent.
Adrian stopped.
Ethan looked away.
His anger suddenly felt dangerously close to fear.
âIâm scared.â
The admission was barely audible.
Adrianâs expression changed.
Ethan hated himself for saying it.
He hated even more what happened next.
Adrian crossed the space between them.
Slowly.
Carefully.
He stopped in front of Ethan.
Then, instead of grabbing him or ordering him around, he simply held out his hand.
Ethan stared at it.
âWhat?â
âCome here.â
Ethan hesitated.
Every sensible part of him told him not to.
Yet he placed his hand in Adrianâs.
Adrianâs fingers closed around his.
Warm.
Firm.
Protective.
Ethan looked down at their hands.
Neither of them spoke.
Adrianâs thumb moved once across Ethanâs knuckles.
A tiny gesture.
Almost unconscious.
But Ethan felt it everywhere.
âYouâre safe here,â Adrian said.
Ethan looked up.
âHow do I know?â
Adrianâs eyes held his.
âBecause no one gets through my gates without me knowing.â
Ethanâs lips parted.
âAnd if they try?â
Adrianâs expression became frighteningly calm.
âThey wonât get a second chance.â
Ethan should have been horrified.
Instead, something inside him settled.
That realization frightened him most of all.
Adrian released his hand.
âYouâre staying tonight.â
Ethanâs eyes widened.
âAbsolutely not.â
âYes.â
âNo.â
âEthan.â
âIâm going home.â
Adrian stepped closer.
âYour apartment is compromised.â
Ethan froze.
âWhat?â
âWe found photographs of your building.â
Silence.
Adrianâs voice softened.
âYouâre not going back there tonight.â
Ethan looked toward the windows.
Then at the man standing before him.
He hated that Adrian was right.
âWhere am I supposed to sleep?â
Adrianâs gaze held his.
âGuest room.â
Ethan narrowed his eyes.
âYouâre sleeping somewhere else.â
Adrianâs eyebrow lifted.
âObviously.â
âGood.â
A pause.
Then Ethan muttered,
âBecause I donât trust you.â
Something dangerous flickered through Adrianâs eyes.
But his voice remained calm.
âYou shouldnât.â
Ethan looked at him.
Adrian turned away.
And for reasons Ethan couldnât understand, those three words stayed with him.
You shouldnât.
Because perhaps the most terrifying thing about Adrian De Luca wasnât that he was dangerous.
It was that he knew exactly how dangerous he was.
And Ethan was beginning to suspect that the closer he got to Adrian, the harder it would become to walk away.
Outside, beyond the gates, a shadow moved between the trees.
Neither of them saw it.
A phone was raised.
A photograph was taken.
This time, it wasnât of Ethan.
It was of Adrian.
Standing beside him.
The message sent with the photograph contained only six words:
âShe would have hated what you becameâ.
