HIS POSSESSION
Chapter Twenty-Three: RESPECTING THE WEIGHT
Thursday morning began before sunrise.
The De Luca headquarters overlooked Manhattan through floor-to-ceiling windows.
Inside the executive conference room, silence settled as Adrian reviewed the final page of a contract.
“This acquisition will double our shipping capacity.”
One of the executives waited expectantly.
Adrian closed the file.
“Proceed.”
The room relaxed almost immediately.
Another meeting concluded.
Another decision made.
As the executives filed out, Luca remained behind.
“You’ve been distracted this week.”
Adrian looked up from the documents.
“Have I?”
“You approved three reports without asking for revisions.”
“I trusted the work.”
Luca smiled faintly.
“That’s one explanation.”
Adrian returned to his paperwork.
The conversation ended there.
That evening…
Le Château welcomed another full dining room.
The warm glow from the chandeliers reflected against polished wood and crystal glasses.
Guests laughed over shared meals.
The pianist drifted effortlessly through familiar melodies.
Everything felt exactly as it should.
At eight o’clock…
The entrance doors opened.
“Good evening, Mr. De Luca.”
“Good evening.”
As Adrian reached table nine, Ethan greeted him with his usual smile.
“Welcome back.”
“Thank you.”
“I hope your afternoon wasn’t too exhausting.”
“It was productive.”
“I’ll take that as a good sign.”
“You may.”
The conversation was brief.
Comfortable.
Almost effortless.
Throughout dinner, Adrian found himself watching Ethan less than before.
Not because he cared less.
Because he already knew what he would see.
Kindness.
Patience.
Quiet professionalism.
Instead…
His attention settled on the moments between.
The small pauses.
The tired breath Ethan released before lifting another tray.
The way he stretched his shoulder when he thought no one was looking.
The tiny signs that another long week was beginning to catch up with him.
Halfway through the evening, Chef Marcel approached table nine.
“I’ve been told you enjoy honest opinions.”
“I’ve made that mistake once already.”
Chef Marcel laughed.
“No mistake.”
He placed a small bowl of mushroom soup on the table.
“New recipe.”
Adrian tasted it thoughtfully.
The chef waited.
“The seasoning is balanced.”
“So far, so good.”
“But…”
Chef Marcel sighed dramatically.
“I knew there would be a ‘but.’”
“The herbs arrive a little late.”
The chef blinked.
“…That’s exactly what I couldn’t identify.”
He shook his head in amazement.
“I don’t know whether to thank you or ban you from my kitchen.”
“I’d prefer the first option.”
“So would I.”
Nearby, Ethan smiled quietly as he watched the exchange.
It had become another familiar part of the restaurant.
Later, Adrian noticed Ethan standing near the service station, rubbing his temples for only a second before straightening as another guest called his name.
By the time Ethan reached the table…
The smile had returned.
No one else seemed to notice.
When Ethan eventually came to refill Adrian’s coffee, Adrian asked gently,
“Have you had your break yet?”
“I have.”
“Did you actually rest?”
Ethan laughed softly.
“I think five minutes counts.”
“It should count for more.”
“I’ll mention that to Chef Marcel.”
“I suspect he’d agree.”
“He probably would.”
Their smiles lingered for a moment before Ethan returned to work.
Near closing time, the restaurant finally grew quiet.
As Adrian reached for the bill, he noticed something tucked inside the folder.
A small handwritten note.
Thank you for always taking the time to share your thoughts on Chef Marcel’s dishes.
— The Le Château Team
He looked up.
The hostess smiled from across the room.
Noah gave a discreet wave.
Chef Marcel pretended to be far too busy to notice.
Ethan looked pleasantly surprised.
“You didn’t know about this?” Adrian asked.
Ethan shook his head.
“No.”
“I think Chef wanted it to be a surprise.”
Adrian carefully folded the note and slipped it into the inside pocket of his jacket.
“Please thank everyone.”
“You can tell them yourself tomorrow.”
The words came naturally.
Because everyone expected tomorrow.
Outside, Luca opened the car door.
“What have you got there?”
Adrian touched the folded note in his pocket.
“A thank-you.”
“For what?”
“I don’t think it was for the recipes.”
Luca waited.
Adrian looked back at the warm lights of Le Château.
“I think…”
“…it was for becoming part of their evenings.”
The following morning, Ethan arrived at the restaurant to find Chef Marcel preparing bread.
“Morning, Chef.”
“Morning.”
The older man looked at him over his glasses.
“How’s your shoulder?”
Ethan blinked.
“My shoulder?”
“You’ve been favoring your right arm all week.”
Ethan looked down instinctively.
“I didn’t realize.”
“I know.”
Chef Marcel’s voice softened.
“You carry too much.”
For a moment…
Ethan didn’t answer.
Then he smiled.
“I’ve always managed.”
Chef Marcel nodded.
“I know.”
He returned to kneading the dough.
He didn’t insist.
He didn’t lecture.
Some people only accepted help when they were ready.
Until then…
The kindest thing you could do was simply stay beside them.
Across town, Adrian stood by the window of his office, looking out over Manhattan.
For reasons he couldn’t fully explain…
His thoughts drifted to Ethan.
Not to the restaurant.
Not to dinner.
Just…
Ethan.
He thought about the tired smile.
The hidden shoulder ache.
The way he gave so much of himself without ever asking for anything in return.
Adrian quietly reached one conclusion.
He would not interfere.
Not unless Ethan asked.
Respect, he believed, sometimes meant allowing another person the dignity of carrying their own burdens.
But…
That didn’t mean he would stop paying attention.
Quite the opposite.
He would notice.
He would remember.
And if the day ever came when Ethan truly needed someone…
Adrian intended to be there.
Even if Ethan never knew.
