HIS POSSESSION Chapter Eighteen: A Name Thursday evening arrived wrapped in a cool autumn breeze. Golden leaves skittered along the pavement outside Le Château before settling against the windows. Inside, warmth welcomed every guest. Candles flickered softly. Crystal glasses reflected the chandelier light. The piano filled the room with a gentle melody that seemed to slow even the busiest evening. For Ethan… It felt like coming home. “Noah.” Chef Marcel emerged from the kitchen. “Please tell me you’ve remembered the bread this time.” “I remembered.” “You said that yesterday.” “I remembered yesterday too.” Chef Marcel sighed dramatically. “I’m surrounded by confidence.” Ethan laughed quietly as he arranged fresh cutlery. The familiar banter made every shift feel lighter. At a few minutes before eight… Ethan found himself glancing toward the entrance. He smiled to himself. There I go again. This time, he didn’t even try to deny it. Some habits simply happened. The doors opened. “Good evening, Mr. De Luca.” The hostess welcomed Adrian warmly. “Good evening.” As Adrian made his way toward table nine, Ethan walked over with an easy smile. “Welcome back.” “Thank you.” “The chef has promised not to experiment on you tonight.” “That is reassuring.” “It reassured the kitchen too.” Adrian’s quiet chuckle was almost lost beneath the music. Dinner began peacefully. The evening special was roasted lamb with rosemary potatoes. Ethan explained the dish while Adrian listened with the same patient attention he always gave him. “I’ll trust your recommendation.” “You usually do.” “I’ve yet to regret it.” Ethan smiled. “I’ll try to keep that record.” Halfway through the evening, the restaurant doors opened once again. A sharply dressed gentleman in his early sixties stepped inside. His silver hair was neatly combed, and his tailored navy suit suggested someone accustomed to boardrooms rather than dining rooms. The hostess greeted him politely. Before she could lead him to a table, his eyes landed on Adrian. A look of pleasant surprise crossed his face. “Adrian.” The greeting carried easily across the quiet dining room. Adrian looked up from his book and stood. “Richard.” The two men shook hands. “It’s been too long,” Richard said. “It has.” “I won’t interrupt your dinner.” “I appreciate that.” “I simply wanted to congratulate you. I heard the merger was finalized.” “It was.” “You’ve done remarkable work.” “Thank you.” Richard smiled warmly. “I’ll let you enjoy your evening.” With another nod, he allowed the hostess to guide him to another table. The entire exchange lasted less than a minute. Simple. Respectful. Professional. Ethan had witnessed it all while pouring wine for another guest. Adrian. The name echoed quietly in his thoughts. It suited him. Calm. Steady. Somehow… It fit the man he had come to know over the past weeks. Without realizing it, Ethan smiled. No longer was Mr. De Luca only a title. He had a name. A life beyond table nine. And somehow… That made him feel a little more real. Later, Ethan returned with Adrian’s main course. “I hope you weren’t interrupted for too long.” “Not at all.” “A friend?” “A business associate.” “You seem to know a lot of important people.” Adrian considered the remark. “I know many people.” Ethan nodded thoughtfully. “I suppose those aren’t always the same thing.” Adrian looked at him for a moment. “No.” “They aren’t.” The answer carried more weight than Ethan could have known. As dinner service continued, Noah drifted over with a basket of warm bread. “Everything alright here?” “Perfectly,” Adrian replied. Noah grinned. “Good. Chef Marcel threatened to blame me if anything wasn’t.” “I believe him.” “You should.” Noah lowered his voice conspiratorially. “He’s made peace with your criticism.” “Oh?” “He says your opinion has improved three recipes already.” Adrian looked toward the kitchen where Chef Marcel was pretending not to listen. “I’ll consider that a compliment.” “It absolutely is.” A little later, Ethan returned to refill Adrian’s coffee. “I’ve been thinking.” Adrian looked up. “That sounds dangerous.” Ethan laughed. “It usually is.” “I realized…” He hesitated. “…I’ve never actually asked what you do.” There was no curiosity driven by wealth. Only genuine interest. Adrian answered simply. “I run my family’s company.” “What kind of company?” “Investment and international logistics.” Ethan nodded. “That sounds… complicated.” “It can be.” “I don’t think I’d survive a week.” “I suspect you’d do better than you think.” Ethan smiled. “And I suspect you’d get lost in our kitchen.” “Almost certainly.” For a brief moment… They laughed together. Not loudly. Not for long. Just enough to leave the warmth of shared amusement behind. As the evening drew to a close, Adrian reached for his jacket. “Goodnight, Mr. De Luca.” “Goodnight, Ethan.” “I hope tomorrow is a little less busy for you.” Adrian paused. “You remembered?” “You mentioned meetings this week.” “I did.” “I hope they went well.” For reasons Adrian couldn’t explain… Those words stayed with him. No one outside his business world ever asked how his work had gone. Yet Ethan had. Not because he wanted something. Simply because he cared enough to remember. The sedan rolled quietly through Manhattan. Luca glanced into the rear-view mirror. “You seem thoughtful.” “I learned something tonight.” “Oh?” Adrian looked out at the glowing city. “Ethan listens more carefully than I realized.” Luca smiled faintly. “I imagine he always has.” Back at Le Château, Ethan finished wiping down table nine. As he folded the napkin, one thought returned to him. Adrian. He whispered it only in his mind. Not because he intended to use it. He never would. To him, the man would always be Mr. De Luca. But now… The title had a person behind it. And somehow… That made tomorrow’s eight o’clock arrival feel just a little more personal. End of Chapter Eighteen 🖤
