HIS POSSESSION
Chapter Twenty: A PLACE KEPT
Saturday evening arrived wrapped in the golden colors of early autumn.
The streets of Manhattan were alive with weekend energy.
Couples strolled beneath trees dressed in amber leaves.
Taxis flowed steadily through the city.
And inside Le Château…
The familiar warmth welcomed another busy night.
“You look cheerful.”
Noah nudged Ethan as they prepared the dining room.
“I slept well.”
“That’s suspicious.”
“I didn’t know sleeping was a crime.”
“It is when you’re happier than the rest of us.”
Chef Marcel walked past carrying a basket of freshly baked rolls.
“If you’re both finished investigating each other…”
“…I need those tables set.”
“Yes, Chef.”
The two young men exchanged amused smiles before returning to work.
At precisely eight o’clock…
The entrance doors opened.
The hostess smiled instinctively.
“Good evening, Mr. De Luca.”
“Good evening.”
She accepted his coat.
“Table nine is ready.”
“I suspected it would be.”
As Adrian crossed the dining room, Ethan was already approaching.
“Welcome back.”
“Thank you.”
“I hope your day was kinder than yesterday.”
Adrian looked at him with quiet surprise.
“It was.”
“I’m glad.”
It was such a simple exchange.
Yet neither of them realized they had begun asking about each other’s days without thinking.
Dinner progressed with the comfortable rhythm that had become uniquely theirs.
No elaborate conversation.
No awkward silence.
Just easy familiarity.
At another table, Chef Marcel emerged carrying a birthday dessert crowned with a single candle.
The entire restaurant joined in singing.
Even Adrian found himself smiling as the young woman at the table wiped away happy tears.
Ethan noticed.
“You smiled.”
“So I’ve been told.”
“I think it suits you.”
The words escaped before Ethan could weigh them.
A faint blush touched his cheeks.
“I’m sorry… that sounded personal.”
Adrian’s expression remained calm.
“I wasn’t offended.”
Ethan let out the breath he hadn’t realized he was holding.
“Good.”
“And…”
A rare softness entered Adrian’s voice.
“…thank you.”
Later that evening, the dinner rush eased.
Chef Marcel stepped into the dining room carrying a tray of small pastries.
“Staff tasting.”
Noah reached immediately.
“I volunteer.”
“You always do.”
Chef Marcel rolled his eyes before offering the tray to Ethan.
Then, almost as an afterthought, he looked toward Adrian.
“Mr. De Luca?”
Adrian hesitated.
“I wouldn’t want to steal from your staff.”
Chef Marcel laughed.
“At this point, you’re practically one of them.”
Several of the servers nodded in agreement.
Even the hostess smiled.
Adrian accepted one pastry.
“Thank you.”
Noah grinned.
“Congratulations.”
“For what?”
“You’ve officially been adopted.”
Laughter rippled through the nearby staff.
For the first time in many years…
Adrian laughed with them.
Not politely.
Not briefly.
Genuinely.
The sound was warm, quiet, and completely unexpected.
The restaurant seemed to pause for just a heartbeat.
Ethan looked up.
There it was again.
That laugh.
Only this time…
It lingered.
As closing time approached, Adrian settled the bill.
Before Ethan could collect the receipt, another couple entered the restaurant, looking disappointed.
“I’m terribly sorry,” the hostess explained.
“We’ve just closed the kitchen.”
The couple nodded politely.
“We understand.”
They turned to leave.
Ethan watched them go with a small sigh.
“I always feel bad when that happens.”
“So do I.”
Adrian glanced toward the nearly empty dining room.
“You close every Monday.”
“We do.”
“And Sundays are your busiest nights.”
“They usually are.”
He smiled.
“But somehow everyone still wants table nine.”
Adrian raised an eyebrow.
“I wonder why.”
Ethan laughed.
“I couldn’t possibly guess.”
For a moment…
They simply stood there.
Then Ethan said quietly,
“If you’re ever running late…”
Adrian looked up.
“…don’t worry about your table.”
A small pause.
“We’ll keep it for you.”
The words were spoken as naturally as if he were commenting on the weather.
Yet the silence that followed gave them unexpected weight.
Adrian held Ethan’s gaze.
“You would?”
Ethan nodded.
“As long as we’re open.”
No special treatment.
No broken rules.
Just a promise that if Adrian called ahead, table nine wouldn’t be given away.
A kindness extended to a regular guest.
Nothing more.
And somehow…
Everything more.
“Thank you,” Adrian said.
“I appreciate that.”
Outside, Luca opened the sedan door.
“You look as though something good happened.”
Adrian fastened his seat belt.
“It did.”
“What was it?”
Adrian looked back at the glowing windows of Le Château.
“They said they’d keep my table.”
Luca smiled.
“That sounds like a small thing.”
“It is.”
A quiet pause.
“…That’s why it matters.”
Inside, Ethan finished folding the last napkin.
Noah wandered over, carrying a stack of menus.
“So…”
“What?”
“You made a promise.”
Ethan frowned.
“Did I?”
“You told Mr. De Luca you’d keep his table.”
Ethan thought for a moment.
“I suppose I did.”
Noah smiled knowingly.
“You don’t make promises lightly.”
Ethan looked toward the empty chair at table nine.
“No.”
He answered softly.
“I don’t.”
Outside, the autumn wind carried fallen leaves along the sidewalk.
Inside Le Château…
Table nine stood ready for another evening.
Not because anyone expected something extraordinary to happen.
But because some promises were quietly kept long before anyone realized how much they meant.
