Chapter 5: The Blood Moon’s Price

785 Words
The cave walls pulsed with Lena’s ragged breathing. Her fingers—no, *claws* now—dug into the damp earth as another wave of pain wracked her body. Moonlight speared through the entrance, painting her skin in silver and shadow. This isn’t human. Her bones itched, her muscles writhing beneath flesh that no longer felt like her own. The bond thrummed in her veins like a second heartbeat, Kael’s presence a wildfire in her mind. "You’re changing." Lena whirled, her newly sharpened vision piercing the darkness. Kael stood at the mouth of the cave, shirt torn, blood matting the dark hair on his chest. The scent of him—sandalwood and iron—flooded her senses, making her mouth water. "What did you do to me?" Her voice came out wrong, layered with a growl that hadn’t been there before. Kael stepped closer, golden eyes tracking the way her pupils dilated. "The bond doesn’t just connect us. It rewrites you. His calloused thumb brushed her bottom lip, where her canines had lengthened. "Your body is learning what your soul already knows." A howl shattered the night. Closer this time. Kael’s head snapped up. "Lycara’s pack. They’ve tracked you." Lena flexed her hands, watching moonlight glint off the black claws that had replaced her nails. "Let them come." The hunger in her voice startled her. Not fear. Anticipation. Kael bared his teeth in something too feral to be a smile. "That’s my mate." The First Shift They came at midnight, when the blood moon hung heaviest in the sky. Five wolves, their coats matted with the gore of previous kills. At their center stood Lycara in human form, her leather armor stitched with silver thread. "Last chance, human." Lycara tossed a blade at Lena’s feet. "Fall on your own steel, and we’ll make it quick." Lena kicked the knife aside. "Come take it from me." The attack was a blur of fangs and fury. Lena moved faster than she ever had, her body reacting before her mind could process. When the first wolf lunged, she twisted, her claws raking its flank. Hot blood sprayed her face. The taste copper and power sent a shockwave through her. Then the pain hit. Her spine arched as something ruptured inside her. Bones cracked. Skin split. A scream tore from her throat as the shift took hold—not full wolf, but something in between. Claws longer. Teeth sharper. Muscles singing with lethal grace. Lycara’s eyes widened. "Impossible! She’s not even one of us!" Kael’s roar of triumph shook the trees. "She’s mine." The Alpha’s Sacrifice Lena fought like a demon unleashed. Her half formed claws tore through wolf flesh. Her enhanced senses tracked every movement. But Lycara had planned well the silver-lined net that dropped from the trees seared Lena’s skin like acid. She went down hard. "You lose, Alpha." Lycara pressed a silver dagger to Lena’s throat. "Your human dies, and the pack follows me." Kael went preternaturally still. Then— "I challenge you." His voice carried the weight of centuries. "Single combat. For the right to rule." The clearing fell silent. Lycara licked her lips. "You’d risk everything? For her?" Kael’s eyes burned like molten gold. "I already have." The rules were simple. No weapons. No interference. Wolf against wolf until one yielded or died. When Kael shifted, his true form dwarfed the others a monstrous black wolf with scars that told stories of countless battles. Lycara’s russet form looked almost delicate in comparison. Almost. The fight was brutal. Blood painted the leaves. Bones snapped. Lena watched, helpless in her silver prison, as Kael took wound after wound allowing Lycara close enough to rake his belly, his throat, anything to keep her from looking back at Lena. He’s protecting me. Even now. Then Lycara’s fatal mistake. She turned, just for a second, to sneer at Lena. Kael struck. His jaws closed around Lycara’s spine with a sickening c***k. Silence. Then whimpers. The remaining wolves lowered their bellies to the earth in submission. Kael shifted back, naked and bleeding, and tore the silver net from Lena’s body. "You’re hurt," she rasped, touching the deep gashes across his chest. He caught her wrist, pressing her palm over his pounding heart. "Worth it." The Aftermath Dawn found them in Kael’s bed, wounds bandaged, bodies entwined. Lena traced the fresh scars on his skin, her claws now human again gently scraping over the raised flesh. "What happens now?" Kael nuzzled her throat, where his mark would one day sit. "Now?" His teeth grazed her pulse point. "Now you learn what it means to be an Alpha’s mate." Outside, the first birds began to sing. And in Lena’s blood, the bond purred.
