Decision to protect

1600 Words
I was performing CPR like the lady said when the ambulance surged through the front door. They push me aside and take charge on my mother and I never took my eyes off her. They carried her to the emergency room and my legs give out from all the running with them. I fall to the ground infront of the ER with no one to contact. Will my Dad even bother to come if I call him? I fidget with the phone and managed to dial Nora's number. The only person who I can think right now who can think on my instead. I pace across the hallway as doctors run around the room. After 15 minutes a doctor comes out, I run to him looking at his face for any kind of remorse. He gave me a small smile, "First, she's fine. She had an attack but she's out of danger" I collapse down, crouching as I hug my knees and bury my face against them, unable to fight the sob that comes out. Within seconds Nora kneels down next to me, wrapping her arm around my back, pulling me into her and hugging me against her chest. I don't even notice her arrival but she is my knight in the shining armor. She doesn't say anything, just wraps her arms tighter and presses her lips to the top of my head. The dark clouds indicating the time pass yet I have to see my mother. They said she is stable and will be out in a few days. You know what's funny, it's around 8 and dad comes home around 7 but today he is enjoying his day with his girlfriend and my poor mom defied her death. It is past 10 and I am worn out. The minimal amount of food and liquid that Nora feed kept me half awake. Nora's dad is with us taking care of the facilities. He probably knew about my dad and maybe laughed behind us and I must've looked like a f*****g fool to them. I hope he didn't cheat on his late wife like my dad. Then I must go on killing spree. "Bella", the awfully familiar voice called for me. I lied my head on Nora's shoulder and closed my eyes to shut him off. Last thing I want is to pass out of dehydration by fighting a person like him. Nora's dad is filling him on the incident and he, like a caring husband goes ballistic about not informing him. "You know I can throw a good punch right?", Nora whispered aware that I am acting. I chuckled softly and nodded my head. I knew it was past midnight when a nurse came to us and informed me that my mum woke up and is asking for me. I jolted across the hallway and ran to her room door and held it firmly. Three of them followed me as I breathe heavily against the door. "Let's see her honey. She's waiting for us", my dad says as he steps forward. I stand straight and block him on the way. "She's waiting for me. I'll go in first", I say, my voice completely calm and Nora gives a deep sigh next to me. "But I wanna see her. Let's get in together", he says a little irritated by my sassy behavior. Oh, the old man like obedience. "I said I'll see her first". Nora's dad held him when he tried to push me away from the door saying to let me go and that I need some alone time with mum after what I had witnessed. I am grateful for his actions though he doesn't know what I witnessed today. The room was cold and smelt of anesthetics. I take slow cautious steps towards the bed, keeping my eyes trained on mum and I hate seeing those wires and machines attached to her, she should never have been here. I reach the side of the hospital bed, the only light in the room is a small one above her bed; the rest of the room is dark and all I can do is stare at her, trying not to burst into tears again. "Hey Mom", I whisper wiping at my eyes quickly as I sniff and try and compose myself. I know the doctor said she was okay, but she's not. This is not okay. What happened to her isn't okay. She open her eyes slowly showing me her familiar chocolate orbs filled with love. "Hey honey", she whispers softly. "You scared me, Mom. I thought I lost you. Are you okay?", I ask as I pull one of the chairs and settled next to her trying not to give any space between us. She reached for my hand and give me a gently squeeze. Silence fall deadly upon as she stares at me. "Bella?", she asks. I look at her and urge her to go on. The beep sound in the room becomes rapid before she shot the next question. "Is your dad cheating on me?", she asks the one question I never prepared for her. But I took a decision for her health and for the need of my mum, I have to lie. I raise my eyebrows in confusion and gave a deep chuckle. "Mom, he is not cheating on you. Oh my god, I said I saw him with a girl. I was going to tell you that I bunked school without you knowing and was running on the streets with Nora and that's when I saw Dad and was nearly caught by him. I wanted to tell you the truth because I got scared. ", I try to say in disbelief. She try to blink her eyes open as a lazy smile stretch on her beautiful face. "You scared me", she says shaking her head. You know what's scary mom. That everything I said at home is true and now I am lying for that unfaithful man you call your husband. "Well you taught me never to bunk the school anymore" "Lesson well learnt. I am sorry to scare you baby. Mommy didn't mean that", she says guilt lacing her voice. I bring her hands to my face and rub my face against the back of her hands. "It's okay mom. I love you", I say and she whisper a weak 'I love you'. I slowly shut her down after making sure she fell asleep. "Isabella I need to talk to you", my dad hisses and starts walking. I look at Nora and give her an assuring smile. I follow him to the hallway we previously sat. "What the f**k was that?", he growl. "Nurse said Mom wants me", I say nonchalantly. He takes in a deep breathe and steps a bit forward. "Why did the neighbors have to tell me that your mom had an attack and not you. Why didn't you call me?". You know once you hate a person the only thing you can see in them is flaws. I now see it in my dad. He should be asking how I am coping and if I am okay. He made it center towards him. I don't remember him asking about mom either. "I wasn't thinking and I thought you will be busy", I try to keep my voice calm. My anger is clawing at me to punch him straight in the face. "Why would I be busy, Isabella? Family comes first to me, you of all people should know that I will do anything for you.", he shouts. I know he probably look like a lunatic in a hallway right now and he don't give a s**t about that. I shrug my shoulder which made him more furious. His chest is heaving up and down as he run his hands through his hair. "May be I didn't want to disturb your Starbucks date", I look at him dead in his eyes and he stop mid air with his jaw dropped and a disbelieving but a livid expression. He opened his mouth but I cut him off. Today he listens to me. "Nice weather. Fit body. It will be perfect with a young girl beside you right?" His eyes widened in horror. Must be nice catching criminals. Maybe I should try police. "You wanna know why mom got an attack and I didn't call you. Let me explain. I went home and told her I saw you with a girl. Nothing more. I saw her collapse infront of me. My lovely mother was dying infront of me. You can't even imagine that. And coming to why I didn't call you, because I don't want a cheat like you next to her. I have to lie to her saying that her husband is faithful to keep her alive. Because that lady is my mom and I can't replace her with anyone. Even if I can I won't. Only a dumb s**t like you will do that", I catch my breathe, adrenaline making my breathe heave in my chest. His face looks pale, but his brows are pulled together with his body completely frozen. I had enough. I turn around and he says, "That's not true" I turn my head not bothering to face him, "That's what I thought when you were r****g that b***h's lips" My footsteps rang along the corridor when I walked to Nora and his dad. I lost my dad and almost lost my mom and to keep my mom alive I have to do one thing. A secret.
