Avery stood across the street from Knox Holdings.
The skyscraper dominated the city’s financial district.
Forty-eight floors of steel-blue glass stretched toward the clouds, reflecting the morning sun like polished crystal.
“KNOX HOLDINGS.”
Its words were carved into a massive slab of black granite at the entrance.
Three years ago…
She had walked through those doors as Grant Knox’s fiancée.
Today…
She returned as his enemy.
She adjusted the sleeve of her tailored white suit.
No one looking at her now would recognize the broken girl they had thrown away.
She had spent three years rebuilding herself.
Today…
She intended to remind them exactly who Avery Hale was.
She crossed the street.
The guards stopped her
“Ma’am, do you have an appointment?” One of the security guards asked.
Her invitation she calmly handed him.
Another security guards checks his tablet.
His eyes widened in disbelief as he stared at the name on the invitation.
“Miss Hale….”
“You may proceed.”
The stares from the employees were exactly what she expected.
Whispers rose from every corner of the lobby.
“Isn’t that..”
“I thought she disappeared.”
“She’s alive?”
She heard every whisper but ignored them all.
Avery made her way to the elevator which leads to the boardroom.
The elevator doors opened and she stepped in.
The mirror reflected every single part of her.
Her controlled anger.
She could feel her pulse racing.
Her palms were damp with sweat.
But she wasn’t going to let that define her all over again.
She wouldn’t let her emotions get the better of her.
“You survived worse.” She muttered to herself.
The elevator doors slid shut.
Silence settled around her.
Floor numbers lit up one after another as the elevator climbed.
Twenty.
Twenty-one.
Twenty-two.
Each passing floor brought her closer to the people who had once destroyed her.
She closed her eyes for a brief moment.
Not to calm herself.
But to remember.
The humiliation.
The betrayal.
The day she had walked out of Knox Holdings with nothing but shattered dreams.
When the doors opened again, a long marble hallway stretched before her.
Every employee standing outside the executive floor turned to stare.
Some looked confused.
Others looked as though they had seen a ghost.
No one spoke.
Their eyes followed her as the sharp click of her heels echoed through the corridor.
At the end of the hallway stood two enormous walnut doors.
Beyond them…
The emergency board meeting had already begun.
Avery inhaled slowly.
Then pushed the doors open.
The room fell into complete silence.
Every conversation died instantly.
More than twenty executives sat around a long mahogany conference table.
Senior directors.
Board members.
Lawyers.
Department heads.
Lola Cole sat near the center of the table, a folder open before her.
Every head turned toward the entrance.
For several long seconds…
No one moved.
One director slowly rose from his chair, disbelief etched across his face.
“…Miss Hale?”
Another adjusted his glasses as though his eyes were deceiving him.
“Impossible…”
Grant Knox, seated at the head of the table, didn’t look up immediately.
He continued reading the document before him.
Sensing the unnatural silence in the room, he slowly lifted his head.
The boardroom doors stood open.
Avery walked in.
She stood tall at the entrance, dressed in a tailored white suit that commanded attention.
She carried herself with quiet confidence, every step measured, every expression carefully controlled.
For three years, she had been a memory he could never erase.
Now she was standing before him.
Not as the woman he once loved.
Not as the fiancée he had lost.
But as a shareholder of Knox Holdings.
For a fleeting second, their eyes locked.
Neither of them spoke.
Neither of them looked away.
The silence in the room became suffocating.
Every executive shifted uncomfortably in their seats, their gazes darting between the two of them.
No one dared to interrupt.
Grant studied her in silence.
She looked different.
Stronger.
The innocence that once defined her had been replaced by an unshakable confidence.
Whatever life had thrown at her over the past three years…
She had survived it.
And judging by the way she stood before him now…
She hadn’t come back for forgiveness.
She had come back for something else.
Something far more dangerous.
He could feel it.
His fingers tightened around the documents in his hand.
It was the first crack in the composure he had spent years building.
Avery noticed.
She said nothing.
“…Avery.” Grant called out to her.
Just her name.
Nothing else.
Yet it carried three years of unanswered questions.
Three years of regret.
Three years of wondering what had become of the woman he had lost.
Avery met his gaze without flinching.
“Mr Knox.” Avery responded.
Two simple words.
Cold.
Professional.
As though she had never once loved the man sitting across from her.
The distance between “Grant” and “Mr. Knox” struck him harder than any accusation ever could.
Without waiting for permission, Avery walked toward the empty chair reserved for shareholders and took her seat.
Only then did the meeting continue.
A heavy silence lingered over the room.
No one seemed eager to be the first to speak.
Finally, the company’s legal counsel cleared his throat.
“Now that all entitled shareholders are present, we may proceed with the emergency board meeting.”
Several directors exchanged uneasy glances before slowly taking their seats.
The atmosphere remained tense.
Lola opened the folder before her.
“As everyone is aware,” she began, “this emergency meeting was convened at the request of Miss Avery Hale.”
Every pair of eyes turned to Avery once more.
She remained composed.
“I requested this meeting because there are several matters concerning Knox Holdings that require immediate attention,” she said evenly.
One of the older directors frowned.
“With all due respect, Miss Hale, you’ve been absent from the company for three years.”
“And yet,” Avery replied without missing a beat, “my shares remained exactly where I left them.”
The room fell silent again.
No one could argue with that.
She was legally entitled to be there.
Grant leaned back in his chair, his gaze never leaving her.
“What exactly is it that you want, Avery?”
She turned to him.
“What I want, Mr. Knox, is transparency.”
Her voice was calm.
“But I suppose this company isn’t very familiar with that.”
Several board members shifted uneasily.
The remark landed exactly where she intended.
Grant’s expression hardened.
“If this is about the past—”
“It isn’t.”
She cut him off before he could finish.
“This is business.”
The words hit him harder than he expected.
Business.
That was all she was willing to make this.
She slid a thick file across the polished table.
“I’ve spent the last three months reviewing Knox Holdings’ financial reports.”
“I found several transactions that don’t add up.”
The room instantly grew alert.
One of the finance directors stiffened.
Lola looked toward the file with narrowed eyes.
Grant’s gaze flickered to the documents before returning to Avery.
“Are you accusing this company of fraud?” he asked quietly.
Avery held his stare.
“I’m saying I have questions.”
“And I expect answers.”
A heavy silence settled over the boardroom.
Several directors exchanged uneasy glances.
The finance director shifted uncomfortably in his seat.
“Those figures have already been audited.” The finance director said.
“Then perhaps your auditors deserve to be investigated too.” Avery responded.
Lola lowered her eyes to the file Avery had placed on the table, scanning its contents.
“Miss Hale…accusations like this can destroy a company’s reputation.” Lola said.
Avery smiled.
“Only if they are true.” She replied.
Grant remained silent.
His expression gave nothing away, but the muscle in his jaw tightened.
Finally, the company’s legal counsel cleared his throat.
“I believe the matters raised by Miss Hale deserve a thorough review.”
“I recommend that the finance department prepare every document requested and present its findings at the next board meeting.”
Several board members nodded in agreement.
“I second that.”
“So do I.”
The motion passed without objection.
Avery gave a single nod.
“Good.”
She closed the file before her.
“If there are no further matters…”
She rose from her chair.
The rest of the board instinctively prepared to do the same.
Then she paused.
“Oh…”
Her voice cut through the room.
“Before we adjourn…”
Every eye turned back to her.
“I have one more announcement.”
Silence fell once again.
Avery looked around the table, allowing her words to sink in before she continued.
“Beginning tomorrow…”
“I will be reporting to Knox Holdings every morning.”
A wave of murmurs swept through the room.
“What?”
“She’s coming back?”
“Does she mean full-time?”
One director frowned.
“But you’re not an executive.”
“No,” Avery replied calmly. “I’m a major shareholder.”
“And I intend to take a far more active role in protecting my investment.”
Her gaze drifted to Grant.
“I trust no one has any objections.”
No one answered.
Because legally…
No one could.
Grant watched her without blinking.
For the first time in years, Knox Holdings no longer felt entirely under his control.
Avery picked up her handbag.
“Have a pleasant day, ladies and gentlemen.”
Without another glance, she walked out of the boardroom.
The sharp click of her heels echoed through the silence she left behind.
Grant’s eyes remained fixed on the closed doors long after she was gone.
“Who brought her back?” He asked
Lola looked confused
“Sir?” She replied confused.
Not looking away from the closed doors.
“No one returns after three years without a reason”
“ I want to know who has been standing behind Avery Hale.”
His gray eyes darkening.
“Every detail.”
