Someone shook my shoulder, disturbing my dream. I groaned and looked into my mother’s eyes, they were identical to my bright green ones.
“Kaia, we’re about to land, I need you to wake up.”
I looked out the private plane windows expecting to see the wide expanse of Montana below me, instead I was shocked by vast forest on both sides. Confused, I look at mom with an obvious what the f**k look on my face.
“Alpha Darren Anderson of the Waxing Moon pack is an old friend of your dads. He emailed right after our plane took off and asked for a favor. So we’re making a slight detour” she answered, reading my look correctly.
I nodded, not really caring. All it did was delay the inevitable. Eventually, we would return to our own pack and I’d have to come face to face with the boy I thought I would marry and his new mate. Then I’d have to spend my days seeing the life I could have had. I kept trying to avoid thinking about it because it destroyed me.
As the plane landed my dad started to brief me on what was happening. Apparently the soon to be Gamma of the pack had gotten into trouble. He attacked and almost killed a human in a mall parking lot. He was being detained in the packs prison while awaiting judgement, yet he refused to tell anyone why he attacked and innocent.
My dad was a brilliant man with a bleeding heart. When he was 12 his brother had gotten into some trouble with the pack. Back then the punishments were either death or banishment. His brother was banished and the guilt and depression lead him to become a rogue with a death wish. After he received word that his brother had died, dad decided to find an alternative. After years of work, he discovered certain herbs could cause a person’s wolf to enter a deep sleep, combined with a silver “bracelet” (handcuff sounded to severe for him) it caused the offender to lose his wolf and abilities for awhile.
He convinced our last Alpha to use it and surprisingly it worked. Word spread and soon my dad was flying all over the world to different packs selling his Wolf Detainment Solution. My mom and I joined him because being away from his mate was killing him and they wanted their only child with them. We’d go back to our pack during downtime but because of the craziness of his schedule, I was homeschooled and combat trained by my parents.
We hopped in the Black Range Rover waiting for us and made our way to the pack lands.
“Kaia, when we get there, I’ll set things up with the Alpha but I need you to go visit the detainee. In order to judge and sentence him fairly, I need to know why he did this. Persuade him to tell us the truth. After he’s sentenced, your mom and I will return home to Blood Diamond. I’ll need you to stay as his guard for the duration of his sentencing then you can come home. I’m only doing this as a favor because I’m officially retired.”
I nodded, “of course I will. But what if his sentencing isn’t over until after Andrew’s wedding? Can I bring him or just leave him in the care of the Alpha’s son?” I didn’t want to attend the wedding because it would rip my heart out, but I had to go. Andrew and his sister Jessalyn were my best friends and I hadn’t seen them both in 8 months.
“We’ll cross that bridge when we get there Ky. I understand, but I can’t make that decision yet,” dad replied. I worked for my dad as an assistant and while I liked the job and having my own money, having my dad as a boss sucked. He didn’t want to treat me special because I was his daughter but at the same time he wanted to make me happy because I was his daughter.
I nodded and sighed as the Waxing Moon Pack grounds came into view>
