Mia brings the letter home from school like she’s carrying the Holy Grail.


“Mama. Mama. MAMA.”


“I can hear you, Mia. I’m right here.”


“I WON.” She shoves the paper at me with both hands. “My class did a colouring competition and mine was the best and the prize is a TRIP. A trip for my FAMILY. To a RESORT. With a POOL.”


I take the letter. Read it. A family weekend at a resort upstate — sponsored by some children’s wellness foundation. Three nights. All inclusive. Pool, spa, the works.


“That’s amazing, baby.”


“There’s a pool, Mama. A pool. With a slide.”


“I saw.”


“Can we go? Can we please go? Please? I’ve never been to a resort. What’s a resort? Is it like a hotel but better? Mason said hotels have tiny soaps. Do resorts have tiny soaps?”


“I’ll think about it.”
