MISHA SHOVED OPEN THE door to her apartment, practically dragging Zeus behind her. She had to get to Carson before Pesta reached him, and she feared it was already too late. On the way up, she called Vasily, telling him about Pesta’s arrival and to hurry to her. Yet, the moment she saw the scene in the kitchen, she knew her fears were correct. It was too late. She screamed, dropping the leash she had clutched on her way up, and raced over to Carson’s unconscious body, dropping to the floor beside him. “Bernson, what the hell did you do?” She scooped Carson into her arms, but he showed no signs of moving, his eyes closed, his breathing… She dropped her cheek to his lips, but she couldn’t tell if she felt him breathing or if that was merely the air conditioning brushing against her fro
