Shayne's POV
My first instinct was to half shift as I covered my head with both arms just before crashing Into one of the lunch table next to me.
Food went flying out, the table gave under me and I crashed to the floor. I suppressed a scream when I felt my a painful surge of electricity surge up my body the moment my body landed on the hard cold tiles of the cafeteria.
“Out of their way!” One of the students shouted.
“You don't want to get in their business, so move!’ Another yelled.
I raised my head, trembling with tears in my eyes when that same arm reached for me again, pulling me up by my hair so it felt like my whole scalp would soon come off.
I couldn't even be bothered with the students chortling and whispering excitedly in the background as they watched me get beaten. It was a regular day in high school after all. No one really cared about the Latent Alpha's daughter.
My eyes met cold, despondent golden irises for eyes that sneeringly observed me as I struggled to get his grip out of my hair, panting hard with the tears gathering in my eyes by each second.
“Care to repeat what you just said little mouse?” His voice was hoarse with anger and so filled with menace I felt my heart freeze the moment I heard him. I've always been scared of the biggest bullies in Academia High of Lion heart's pack, the Triplets: Thomas, Thane and Theodore. They were a menace to my life ever since they set their eyes on me and realized I was latent.
I ignored Thomas's probing gaze into my soul and tried hard to get away from his grip, but my eyes couldn't help but notice Thane standing not too far away, playing with a locket around his hand. Theodore was seated in one of the chairs, speculating the scene with a mock smirk on his face. He certainly was enjoying watching his brothers make my life a living hell.
Just three more days until I find my mate. I'm certain he won't sit still and watch these assholes bully me like they have nothing else better to do in their lives.
“Look, I'll do your stupid homeworks. That's it, right? But please…” the tears I've been holding up in my eyes for long were threatening to fall as my lips quivered. “That locket is the only thing left of my mother before she died. Please just give it back. I'll do anything.”
“Bo-hoo. You expect us to just obey your others because of your pathetic life tale? Not a chance little mouse.” Thane's smirk was evil and devious as he played with the locket, watching my expression turn to anxiety as I watched him.
“She probably died because she couldn't stand having a useless latent for a daughter. I wonder why your father still haven't kicked you out.” Thomas said, excitement brimming in his eyes as he watched me struggle to get away from his grip but to no avail. They were powerful, too powerful for a weakling like me. Weak, weak, why was I so weak?
Their words were hurtful, piercing right into my heart and leaving nothing but shards of it.
I suddenly half shifted again, my fingers shifting into claws as I swiped right at Thomas's face. A gasp tore through the crowd as he let go of me. I didn't want to resort to violence, knowing I'd only make situations worse, but that locket meant more to me than anything in the world and I had to get it back.
The moment I felt my feet on the floor when he let go off me, I dashed towards Thane. Just when I thought I was fast enough to snatch it, a force held me back, and before I even had another glimpse of the locket, I found myself on the floor, hard, with my own back breaking the fall.
I groaned in agony and raised my eyes to meet similar golden irises for eyes, but this time, compared to Thomas, his hair was much more longer, packed neatly into a bun behind his head. It was Theodore.
“That b***h… “ my heart dropped to the pit of my stomach when I heard Thomas curse behind me.
“Okay. That's enough for today.” Thane said coming up to me with the locket. Forgetting the pain I had just gone through, I sat up, earnest in my eyes as I reached up to grab it, only to sit there and watch as Thane ripped the locket right Infront of me.
The whole school burst out laughing at the former look of desperation in my eyes turn into shock and horror as I watched my locket, my late mother's locket, fall apart Infront of me.
The bell wrung for lunch over, and everyone walked away without even sparing me a glance by the time the teachers began filing in to ensure everyone got out.
“I'll deal with you later.” Thomas gave me dead eye glare as he wiped the blood running down the side of his chin before he grabbed some books and threw it at me, then left.
The tears finally rolled down my cheeks as I gathered their books and mine into my school bag which had been emptied and tossed to the side by them.
I was still shaking after class even as I went into the bathroom. My throat was sore and my eyes and head hurt so much, but none hurt in comparison to how my heart did. It felt like it was being squeezed with a clipped.
Anastasia and Monica suddenly walked in to see me washing my face. They were another set of bullies in school who was bent on making my life hell in the school. Anastatia was the principal's daughter and Monica was her snobbish best friend.
As they giggled and walked in, I ignored them, washing my face much faster so I'd leave.
“Awwwwn, Shayne, I heard about your mom's locket. That's too bad. I almost felt sorry for you though.” Anastatia said, staring at my reflection with mirth in her eyes.
Having had enough already, I grabbed my bag and turned to leave, but she grabbed my arm with one hand, exerting her wolf force on it, leaving me almost crying out in pain as I felt her crush my pains from just grabbing my arm.
“Here, you missed a spot.” With that, she took a cup of juice Monica was holding and emptied the entire thing on my head, leaving me gasping for breath just before she released me with a ludicrous smirk.
“There, now you not only look like a wet rat, you smell like one too.” Monica giggled. Knowing I was no match for the two bitches, I Marched out of the bathroom and out of the school, my heart pounding hard in my chest.
The tears were close to falling and I wondered at the distance my home was from school and felt like breaking down there and then when an arm grabbed me.
I turned with fear in my eyes, only relaxing when I saw Julie, my best friend. Her soft brown eyes were filled with worry as she looked at me.
“Anastatia again?”
I nodded, not able to speak as it felt like my throat was clogged and if I force myself to speak, I would burst out crying.
“Come on. Let's go. David opted to drop us off today.”
David was her older brother in art class studying to get into a good law school. I had the hugest crush on him. But considering he was popular, hot and had all the better looking girls trolling after him, I knew I didn't stand a chance.
We got to the car and he was already seated at the driver's seat, looking so Ethereally handsome in a white shirt tucked into loose fitted jeans and expensive loaafers. His dark hair was brushed back with gel and when his eyes met mine and the bright sunlight hit his brown eye, my knees almost gave way.
“Anna.” I saw the worry in his eyes and his next question left my stomach doing sickening twists. “Are you okay? Julie told me what happened.”
I managed a smile, although I could feel my face burning in shame and embarrassment, as I nodded just before we got into the car.
He knew. He had always know stupid. Of course Julie would always let him know what's going on with her best friend. He'd know that I'm a weakling who gets pushed around and bullied everyday because I was a latent and couldn't stand up for myself.
The whole ride back home I was quiet, only listening to Julie and David banter, chipping in once in a while.
When we arrived, I thanked them, ready to leave but David called me back. He exchanged knowing glances with Julie before he handed me a small jewelery box. The box looked used but I couldn't help the small flip my heart did when I met those eyes of his again. I was so jealous of their eye color, especially when it got hit by bright rays of sunlight.
“We wanted you to have this.”
I collected the box and smiled. “Thank you.”
“You can open it later. We have to go. See you tomorrow.” Julie beamed and David winked at me just before he drove up, leaving me feeling those same fluttering sensations in my heart again.
I didn't realize I still had a smile on my face till I met dad. He was all dressed up and the Omegas were tediously busy in the kitchen. I frowned slightly.
“What's going on?”
“Good. You're here. Go get dressed, Anna We have guests coming over tonight.”
I was still very much confused as I got prepared to meet the so called guests m. Father had never looked that anxious and all dressed up just for some common guests. He was Alpha Damien after all of Lion heart's pack after all.
I turned my attention to the jewelry box and upon opening it, I felt tears cloud my vision. My hand shook uncontrollably as I reached out to grab Mom's locket from the box. A note there read, ‘I took a pass from one of the lunch ladies in the cafeteria and tried gathering the pieces of the locket I could find and David helped me put it together. We hope it's still okay to wear.’
Without hesitation I put the locket on, feeling my heart swell as I looked at my reflection. Julie was the best, and David was so sweet. I may not have the best life, but they both always find a way to make things better.
Realizing I was already late, I hurriedly put on my long sleeves cardigan and my maxi skirt and uggs. Due to the scars imprinted in me over tears of bullying, I had gotten used to wearing baggy clothes so to hide them since I couldn't afford makeup every time.
As I got downstairs, smiling while touching my pocket, I froze in my tracks, still on the stairs as I watched my father hug a woman tenderly before they both shared an intimate kiss.
Beside the woman were so many luggage, including bags, boxes and even a shoe rack.
“What's going on?”
The two suddenly parted, and the woman beamed warmly at me.
“You must be Anna.”
“Dad, who is she?” I didn't bother to hide the contempt in my voice. I had just watched a stranger share a passionate kiss with my own father. Of course I'd be furious.
“Anna, mind your manners. This is Ondine,
and she's your new step mom, and from today henceforth, she'll be living here with us permanently.”
It felt like a bomb had been dropped in the room. I grabbed the railings to steady my self because I sensed any second, my legs might give way from the shocking news I've just heard.
“Nice to meet you Anna. I hope we can get along well. You're so pretty, your father's words did no justice to how you look. My sons will be lucky to have a stepsister as beautiful as you are.”
Sons?
Just then, three familiar figures entered into the house, both releasing a sigh as their dropped their luggage at the entrance.
“Thomas, Thane, Theodore, meet your new step sister, Anastatia. I hope you four get along.”
The similar look of horror and shock was in their eyes as their eyes simultaneously met mine.
Just when I thought my life couldn't get any worse. My high school bullies were now my stepbrothers?
