True to form, we did start dinner with an argument about the wine. I blamed the damned set menu which, despite looking delicious, meant we were all eating the same thing.  if we’d all chosen different things it would have been fine but no...  Eloise insisted that the best vintage to pair with our mushroom and chestnut wellington was a well-aged Medoc and Mateo argued – with my father’s full support despite the fact he was drinking whiskey – that a Côte Rôtie had a finesse that would showcase the beef dish to perfection. Both tasted like vinegar to me. Everyone’s eyes were on me, weighing down through the top of my head. The waiter hovered at my side, wine bottles at the ready for whatever I choose.
