I must have been floating. I had to be, unleashed and adrift between the fairy-lights that twinkled like a sea of stars above my head. They ducked and weaved in the night, loops through the arches of my ruin, wrapped around the branches of the surrounding trees. The hum of conversation, the sight of a thousand faces I didn’t quite know, couldn’t touch me tonight. Not here, in this otherworldly place that I’d created. I was a queen more than content to linger on the side-lines and watch her court. I was happy. Unadulteratedly happy. I’d achieved exactly what I said I would. Every little gasp, the widening of eyes, the hands that drifted up to touch the fairy-lights…they were all mine. And I hid them away like rubies and gems, tucked just under my heart.
