Chapter 22Rain still fell long after Ken got behind the wheel once more. In the flatness of the American heartland, it seemed like the nondescript gray clouds went on forever in all directions. The sun never really set, as far as she could tell. But then, it didn’t rise for them that day, either. They just had a dull lightness during the afternoon and an illuminated darkness at night. The weather, set against the cold, hard plains, might have been beautiful to see if it wasn’t so pervasive.
