A Dangerous Beginning

The storm arrived shortly after midnight. Rain slammed against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the mansion, turning the ocean outside into a black, raging abyss. Lightning flashed across the sky, illuminating the empty living room where Aiko sat alone. Hours had passed since Ren rushed back to his office. Hours since their wedding night had transformed into a corporate emergency. Aiko stared at her untouched cup of tea. This was absurd. Most brides spent their wedding night celebrating with their husbands. She spent hers wondering whether her billionaire husband was being destroyed by enemies. The irony was almost funny. Almost. A loud crack of thunder shook the mansion. Aiko sighed and stood up. Sleep wasn't coming. Not tonight. She decided to explore the enormous house. The mansion felt more like a luxury hotel than a home. Marble floors stretched endlessly beneath elegant chandeliers. Expensive artwork lined the walls. Every room seemed carefully designed. Perfect. Cold. Empty. Eventually she wandered into a large study. Unlike the rest of the house, this room felt personal. Bookshelves filled every wall. Awards sat inside glass cases. Family photographs rested on a nearby table. Aiko paused. This was the first time she had ever seen anything personal about Ren. Most articles described him as a ruthless businessman. A machine in human form. A billionaire with no heart. But the photographs told a different story. One picture showed a young Ren smiling beside an older couple. Another showed him holding a trophy during high school. There was even one where he appeared genuinely happy. Aiko found herself staring at it. Strange. She had never imagined Ren smiling. The man she knew looked permanently annoyed by the existence of humanity. A reasonable reaction, perhaps. Humanity did create social media comments. Still. Something felt off. Before she could think further, her eyes landed on a framed photograph near the corner of the desk. A woman. Beautiful. Elegant. And standing beside Ren. The photo clearly wasn't recent, but the closeness between them was impossible to miss. Aiko frowned. Who was she? An ex-girlfriend? A fiancée? The woman looked important. For reasons she couldn't explain, a strange discomfort settled in her chest. She quickly looked away. Not her business. Their marriage wasn't real anyway. Right? The sound of a phone vibrating interrupted her thoughts. Aiko looked around. The noise came from a nearby drawer. She hesitated. Then opened it. A second phone. Its screen lit up. A message appeared. Unknown Number: "The first move is complete. The bride knows nothing. Proceed with phase two." Aiko froze. Her heart stopped. The message disappeared seconds later. As if it had never existed. She stared at the screen. What did that mean? The bride knows nothing. The bride. That was her. Wasn't it? Her hands trembled slightly. Something was very wrong. Very, very wrong. Suddenly footsteps echoed from the hallway. Aiko quickly shoved the phone back into the drawer. The study door opened. Ren entered. His dark hair was slightly damp from the rain. His expression looked exhausted. And furious. He immediately noticed her standing there. "What are you doing?" The question wasn't hostile. Just cautious. Aiko crossed her arms. "Exploring." His eyes narrowed slightly. "You should be sleeping." "You should be on your honeymoon." A brief silence followed. To her surprise, Ren almost smiled. Almost. "Fair point." He loosened his collar and walked deeper into the room. For the first time, Aiko noticed how tired he looked. Dark circles rested beneath his eyes. His shoulders appeared tense. The attack on his company had clearly done damage. "How bad is it?" she asked quietly. Ren looked toward the window. "Worse than I expected." Aiko waited. After several seconds, he continued. "Someone leaked confidential acquisition plans." "Can they be stopped?" "Eventually." "Do you know who did it?" His jaw tightened. "No." The answer sounded personal. Dangerously personal. Like betrayal hurt more than the financial loss. Aiko hesitated. Then remembered the message. Should she tell him? Should she mention the second phone? The warning? Before she could decide, Ren's phone rang again. He answered immediately. "What is it?" Silence. Then his face changed. Every trace of exhaustion vanished. Only anger remained. "I'm on my way." The call ended. "What happened now?" Aiko asked. Ren grabbed his coat. "Someone broke into one of my company facilities." "What?" "Security cameras were disabled." Aiko's stomach dropped. This wasn't random. The attacks were escalating. Whoever was behind them wanted something. And they weren't stopping. Ren headed toward the door. Then unexpectedly paused. "Aiko." She blinked. It was the first time he had spoken her name without sounding cold. "What?" For a moment, he seemed unsure. Then he finally said, "Lock the doors." A chill ran through her. "What aren't you telling me?" His gaze met hers. The silence lasted several seconds. Finally he answered. "I think whoever is targeting my company may eventually target you." The room suddenly felt colder. Aiko stared at him. "Why me?" "Because you're my wife." The words hit harder than they should have. Not because they were romantic. Because they sounded protective. And Ren Takahashi wasn't supposed to be protective. He was supposed to be ruthless. Untouchable. Emotionless. Yet the concern in his eyes seemed genuine. Before she could respond, he left. The door closed behind him. Aiko stood frozen. Alone once more. Outside, the storm raged on. Inside, her thoughts raced. The mysterious message. The woman in the photograph. The attacks on Ren's company. None of it made sense. Yet somehow she knew everything was connected. Somewhere out there, someone was moving pieces across a giant chessboard. And she had unknowingly become one of those pieces. A flash of lightning illuminated the room. For a split second, she noticed something sticking out beneath a stack of papers on Ren's desk. A folder. Partially hidden. Curiosity got the better of her. She walked over and pulled it free. The words on the cover made her blood run cold. CONFIDENTIAL SUBJECT: AIKO NAKAMURA Her name. A file about her. Created months before their marriage. Long before Ren proposed. Long before her father's debts. Long before everything. Aiko slowly opened the folder. And immediately realized her life had been a lie. To Be Continued.....
