Barrier
Jess frowned and sat back into a comfortable chair that hadn’t been there moments before. She filed the information of the chair and how she made it away for when she had time to consider it. Rolling out from her the veil pulsed and throbbed as if in tune with her concentration as she stared at the shield. At least she could see it now, even if it was even more perplexing. It was constructed in power—not just any power, but a power level that could only be wielded by another of the Elder. Jess guessed not just any Elder either. An extremely powerful one.
She suspected that Elder was Damien but she couldn’t bring herself to ask at the moment. He’d been badgering her about the need to stop cutting off her emotions. He’d blown her nearly killing the boy in the village right out of proportion when he’d returned and was filled in about her exploits. Having had her fill of being lectured, she’d left early before Damien woke up. She’d wandered aimlessly for a little before ending up here, looking at the barrier that surrounded Ilarith.
The power it would have taken to construct it was something she was struggling to understand. Yet she needed to. Jess flung herself from her chair and started pacing—a habit she recognised with an absent part of her mind, one she seemed to have picked up from Alex, although she remained calm. At least that was something she could be grateful for.
The pulsing of the veil around her grew more erratic, bands of power striking and exploding, sending sparks, tiny motes of light into the air around her. She frowned, wondering what was causing the instability, then dismissed it. She didn’t have time right now to ponder the peculiarity of the veil.
Right now she needed to understand the shield.
