The red light didn’t get closer. We did.
Twelve hours became six. Six became two. The truck ate miles and ash. The circle of dead grass stayed behind us like a scar.
Sinner drove. One hand on the wheel. One on my stomach. Lily asleep between us, head on my lap. Daniel and Rivera in the back, journal open, mapping coordinates that shouldn’t exist.
“It’s not on Earth,” Daniel said. Voice low. “The Brother showed us a planet. But this signal? It’s coming from under us. Nevada. Same bunker system, just deeper. Way deeper.”
Rivera traced a line with her finger. “The First wrote the code. The Brother devours it. The Master sits on bone and makes worlds kneel. He’s been here since 1947. Maybe before.”
I kept my hands on my stomach. Teaching. Coding. The baby kicked back in rhythm. Learning fast. Too fast.
“He’s scared,” I whispered.
Sinner glanced at me. “Who? The Master?”
“No. Him.” I tapped my belly. “The baby. He felt the Brother. Felt the teeth. He’s scared but he’s not running. He’s writing.”
Lily woke up. Rubbed her eyes. “Mommy, the baby’s writing my name too. L-I-L-Y. With light.”
Sinner smiled. Tired but real. “Of course he is. Can’t have a sister without putting her in everything.”
The truck hit pavement. Old highway. Cracked but solid. Signs rusted. One still read: *AREA 51 - NO TRESPASSING*
Daniel killed the headlights. “There. Gate’s open. It’s been open since 1947. Waiting.”
The gate was bone. Literally. Arched ribs forming a doorway. No guards. No cameras. Just wind and the red light pulsing from underground.
Sinner stopped the truck. Everyone out. No weapons this time. Guns wouldn’t work on bone. Bullets wouldn’t work on gods.
Rivera carried the journal. Daniel carried Lily when she got tired. Sinner carried me when my legs shook.
The stairs went down. And down. And down. Past concrete. Past steel. Past things older than both.
The air got cold. Got heavy. Got thick with the smell of ozone and old graves.
At the bottom: a door. Not steel. Not wood. Bone. Fused together. Carved with symbols. Same as the ring. Same as the throne. Same as my skin when the light hit me.
The symbols moved. Shifted. Formed words.
*KNEEL, BLOODLINE. KNEEL AND LIVE.*
Sinner didn’t kneel. He put me down gentle. Stepped forward. Put his hand on the door.
“It’s not locked,” he said. “It’s testing.”
The door opened inward. No sound. Just pressure. Like the world exhaled.
Inside: a cathedral. Bigger than the bunker. Bigger than the sky. Ceiling lost in dark. Floor made of fused bone. White. Clean. No dust.
And at the far end, on a dais of skulls: the throne.
Bone. Massive. Thorns instead of arms. A crown floating above it, spinning slow. Made of teeth. Not human. Not anything human.
And on the throne: a man.
Or what used to be a man. Tall. Thin. Skin stretched over bone. Eyes empty sockets with red light inside. Crown hovering over his head but not touching. Like even it was afraid to.
The Master. The brother of the First.
He didn’t speak. Didn’t need to. His voice filled our bones:
*YOU KILLED MY BROTHER. YOU BURNED MY CODE. YOU MADE THE WORLD GROW GRASS. NOW YOU COME TO MY HOUSE?*
Sinner stepped in front of us. Always. “We came to end it. No more kneeling. No more thrones. No more bloodlines as cages.”
The Master tilted his head. Red light flared. *THEN YOU CAME TO DIE. KNEEL AND I MAKE IT FAST. FIGHT AND I MAKE IT FOREVER.*
Lily stepped out from behind Daniel. Small. Five years old. No fear. “You’re not the boss of us. My daddy said so.”
The Master looked at her. Really looked. Red light dimmed like he was curious. *CHILD. YOU ARE NOT CODE. YOU ARE NOT BONE. WHAT ARE YOU?*
“Me,” Lily said. Simple. Certain. “Lily Blackwood. Daughter of Kane and Angel. Sister of the baby. And you don’t get to touch my family.”
The Master laughed. Sound like bones grinding. *ADOREABLE. THE FIRST TRIED LOVE. MY BROTHER TRIED HUNGER. I TRIED ORDER. ALL FAIL. ONLY THE THRONE REMAINS.*
He stood. The crown dropped onto his head. Locked. Teeth sank into bone. He didn’t bleed. He absorbed it. Grew taller.
The floor shook. The bone cathedral lit up. Veins of red light running through the floor, toward us.
“He’s trying to overwrite us,” Daniel said. “Turn us into bone. Into subjects. Into his army.”
Rivera opened the journal. Pages flipped on their own. Stopped on the last page. Blank until now. Then words wrote themselves:
_Only one thing the Master cannot devour. Only one thing the throne cannot hold. -M_
“M,” Rivera whispered. “Mom. She left us a note. For now.”
“What is it?” Sinner asked. Red light licking at his boots. Turning bone white to ash gray.
Rivera looked up. At me. At my stomach. “A child born of choice. Not code. Not bloodline. Not throne. A child born because two people chose each other when every code said no.”
The Master heard her. Turned fully to me. Red eyes fixed on my stomach. *THE HEIR. THE NEW CODE. I WILL TAKE IT. I WILL SIT. I WILL MAKE ALL WORLDS KNEEL.*
He raised his hand. The bone floor rose up. Spikes shooting toward us.
Sinner moved. Fast. Not to fight. To shield. He covered me and Lily with his body as bone slammed down around us.
Pain. Not his. Mine. The baby inside screamed. Not in fear. In anger.
The gold light burst from me. Stronger than before. Brighter. The baby was writing now. Not just learning. Creating.
The spikes stopped inches from Sinner’s back. Turned to dust.
The Master staggered. *WHAT— WHAT IS THIS CODE? I DO NOT KNOW IT—*
“It’s not code,” I said. Stood. Sinner’s hand in mine. Lily’s hand in my other. “It’s choice. He chose to be born. We chose to have him. You can’t devour choice. You can’t sit on it. You can only serve it.”
The baby kicked. Hard. The gold light became a pulse. A heartbeat. Not mine. Not Sinner’s. His.
The Master screamed. Crown cracked. Teeth fell out. He dropped to his knees.
*NO— THE THRONE— IT BURNS— I CANNOT— KNEEL—*
“You already are,” Sinner said. Voice quiet. Final. “You’ve been kneeling to fear this whole time. Now kneel to something else.”
The crown shattered. The throne cracked down the middle. The bone cathedral groaned and started to collapse.
The Master looked up at us. Red light fading from his eyes. For one second, he looked human. Tired. Old.
*I REMEMBER… I WAS A MAN ONCE. BEFORE THE THRONE. BEFORE THE KNEELING. I HAD A NAME.*
“What was it?” I asked.
He smiled. Teeth gone. Just gums. “Doesn’t matter now. Let it end.”
The ceiling came down. Bone raining.
Sinner grabbed us all. Threw himself over us. Daniel and Rivera covered Lily.
Impact. Dust. Silence.
When I could breathe again, we were alive. Under Sinner’s body. Under a shield of bone that hadn’t crushed us.
The cathedral was gone. Just rubble. Just sky. Stars back. Real stars.
The Master was gone too. Dust. Like the woman in white. Like the First.
Just the broken crown. Half melted. Half grass growing through it.
Silence.
Then Lily crawled out from under Sinner. Checked his face. Patted his cheek. “Daddy. Wake up. We won.”
Sinner opened his eyes. Coughed dust. First thing he did was check me. Then the baby. Then Lily.
“We won,” he said. Voice rough. “No throne. No kneeling.”
Daniel helped Rivera up. She was crying. Not sad. Relief. “My mother. She knew. She always knew love would end it.”
I touched my stomach. The gold light faded. But the baby was calm now. Sleeping. Full.
“He’s tired,” I said. “He wrote a lot.”
Sinner kissed my forehead. Then my stomach. Then Lily’s head. “Good. He can rest. We all can.”
We walked out of the rubble. No stairs this time. The earth opened for us. Let us out.
Sunrise. Not red. Gold. Real gold.
The truck still worked. Of course it did.
As we drove away, the ground behind us sealed shut. Bone sinking. Cathedral gone. Like it was never there.
Rivera burned the journal. Last page first. Ash to wind. “No more records. No more code. Just us.”
Daniel took her hand. Held it. “Just us.”
Lily fell asleep again. This time on Sinner’s chest while he drove.
I leaned against him. Hand on my stomach.
For the first time since the chapel, no one was coming. No signal. No voice. No threat.
Just road. Just family. Just free.
Sinner kissed my hair. “Where to, Mrs. Blackwood?”
“Home,” I said. “Wherever that is. As long as it’s with you.”
He nodded. “Then home it is.”
We drove. Windows down. Music on. Lily humming in her sleep. Baby quiet inside me.
Peace. Real peace.
Until the radio crackled. Not static. Not code. A voice. Human. Old. Tired.
*IF YOU’RE HEARING THIS, YOU WON. GOOD. NOW LISTEN. THE FIRST HAD A BROTHER. THE BROTHER HAD A MASTER. BUT THE MASTER HAD A FATHER. AND HE’S BEEN WAITING LONGER. HE DOESN’T WANT TO KNEEL. HE DOESN’T WANT TO EAT. HE WANTS TO FORGET. AND HE’LL ERASE EVERYTHING TO DO IT. -M*
The radio died.
M. Margaret. Rivera’s mother. The original Margaret.
Sinner turned the radio off. Threw it out the window.
“Let him try,” he said. Hand on my stomach. “Let him all try. We’re Blackwoods. We don’t kneel. We don’t run. We don’t forget.”
Lily murmured in her sleep. “Daddy’s right, Mommy. We’re awesome.”
I smiled. Kissed Sinner’s jaw. “Yeah. We are.”
The baby kicked once. Strong. Sure.
And far, far away, in a place with no stars, something opened its eyes and whispered a single word:
*FORGET.*
