The little girl’s hand stayed out. Small. Warm. Blue eyes just like mine.
Sinner didn’t move. Gun hand twitching at empty air. “Angel. That’s not— that can’t be—”
“My name’s Lily,” the girl said. Like it was obvious. “You named me after your grandma. The nice one. Not the mean one.”
My knees almost buckled. Lily. The name we’d whispered one night on the run. If it’s a girl. If we’re lucky. If we’re free.
“It’s impossible,” Rivera said behind us. Voice breaking. “She’s five. We haven’t even— you’re not even—”
The man on the porch waved again. My father. Daniel. Older. More scars. But alive. Alive.
He walked down the steps. No cut. No gun. Just jeans and a flannel. Same as when he taught me to change oil at twelve.
“Took you long enough,” he said. Voice rough. Same as I remembered. “Dinner’s getting cold.”
Sinner stepped in front of me. Body as a shield. Always. “You’re dead. We saw the warehouse. We saw the body.”
Daniel stopped ten feet away. Hands up. No threat. “Body was a John Doe. Teeth filed down. My idea. Had to die so the Architect would stop hunting you. Had to stay dead so Margaret could run the FBI without me pulling her strings.”
Rivera made a sound. Half sob. Half curse. “You let me think you were gone. Twenty years. I raised her alone. I became a monster for you.”
“You became a mother,” Daniel said. Looked at me. “And you became a queen without a throne. Proud of you, kid.”
The grass around us grew faster. Higher. Like it recognized him. Like it remembered.
Lily tugged my hand. “Mommy, you’re squishing my fingers.”
I looked down. I was holding her hand. Didn’t remember reaching. But it felt right. Felt like home.
“How,” Sinner said. Gun still in his mind if not his hand. “How is she here? How are you here? We burned the code. We killed the throne.”
Daniel knelt. Eye level with Lily. “Because blood calls to blood. You said it yourself. When you broke the crown, you didn’t end the line. You changed it. Love rewrote the code. And love remembers.”
He looked up at me. “She’s not from the future, Angel. She’s from the choice you made. When you chose truth over blood. When you chose him over power. The timeline split. This one’s the one where you win.”
Lily pulled me toward the house. “Come on. Daddy made mac and cheese. Your favorite. With extra bacon like you like.”
Sinner didn’t follow. He looked at Daniel. “If this is a trap, if she’s a projection, if you touch her—”
“It’s not,” Daniel said. Stood. “I’ve been waiting in the split. Watching. Making sure no one from the old timeline followed you. The woman in white? She tried. I sent her back to dust.”
Rivera walked past all of us. Straight to Daniel. Slapped him. Hard. Then hugged him. Hard. “You i***t. You absolute idiot.”
Daniel hugged her back. “I know. I’m sorry, Maggie. For all of it. For the lies. For the blood. For making you think you had to be the monster.”
Lily rolled her eyes. “Grandma, you’re wrinkling Daddy’s shirt.”
We walked to the house. Small. White. Porch swing. Garden out back. Smelled like cut grass and bacon.
No cameras. No guards. No weapons on the table. Just plates. Just food. Just family.
Sinner checked every corner anyway. Old habits. Then he sat. Pulled me onto his lap. Hand on my stomach. Hand on Lily’s head.
“Real?” he whispered in my ear.
“Real,” I whispered back. Tears on my cheeks. “All of it.”
Daniel served food. Mac and cheese. Bacon. Cornbread. Same recipe he made when I had nightmares as a kid.
Rivera ate like she was starving. Like twenty years of grief finally let her taste food again.
Lily climbed into my lap. Stole bacon from my plate. “Daddy says you’re gonna have another baby. A brother for me. He’s gonna be loud like Daddy.”
Sinner choked on water. “What? Another— Angel—”
I blinked. Hand on my stomach. Still flat. But warm. Fuller. “I… I didn’t know. Not yet. Not for sure.”
Daniel smiled. “You will. In about three months. Boy. Blackwood stubborn. Sinner eyes. Your heart.”
Rivera reached across the table. Took my hand. “I’m sorry I missed it. The first one. The pregnancy. The birth. I was too busy being angry at the world.”
“You’re here now,” I said. Squeezed her hand. “That’s all that matters.”
After dinner, Lily dragged me outside. Showed me her room. Pink walls. Books. A nightlight shaped like a motorcycle. “For Daddy,” she said.
Sinner stood in the doorway. Watching us. Like he couldn’t believe it was real. Like he was waiting for the bunker to close again.
“It’s real,” Daniel said from behind him. Hand on his shoulder. “I promise, son. No more wars. No more blood. Just this.”
Sinner didn’t pull away. “Why me? Why her? Why this life?”
“Because you chose her,” Daniel said. “Every time. When it was easier to walk away. When it was smarter to shoot. You chose love. That’s the only code that ever mattered.”
Night fell. Fireflies in the yard. Lily fell asleep between me and Sinner on the couch. Small and warm and real.
Daniel and Rivera sat on the porch. Not touching. Not yet. But close. Talking. Maybe for the first time without lies.
Sinner kissed my forehead. “If this is a dream, don’t wake me up.”
“It’s not,” I said. “I can feel her. Lily. And the other one. Just a flicker. Like a heartbeat.”
He put both hands on my stomach. “Then we protect them. Both of them. With everything.”
“No thrones,” I said.
“No crowns,” he said.
“No blood,” we said together.
The house went quiet. Peaceful. Safe.
Until the lights flickered. Once.
Sinner was on his feet instantly. Gun materializing in his hand. He must’ve kept one hidden after all.
Daniel stood too. Calm. “Relax. It’s just the grid. Old wiring.”
But Lily sat up. Rubbed her eyes. Looked at the window.
“Mommy,” she said. Small voice. “The man in the glass is back.”
We all turned.
At the window. Outside in the dark.
A man. Tall. Suit. No face. Just static. Like TV snow.
He raised his hand. Pressed it to the glass.
And wrote one word with his finger.
*ARCHITECT*
Not the woman. Not Daniel. Not Rivera.
Something else.
The lights died. Total dark.
Lily didn’t scream. Just whispered, “He says dinner’s not over. Dessert is served.”
Cold air poured in through the walls. The grass outside stopped growing. Turned black.
Sinner pulled me and Lily behind him. Daniel grabbed Rivera.
From the dark, a voice. Not female. Not male. Both. Neither.
*THANK YOU FOR REWRITING THE CODE. I’VE BEEN BORED FOR CENTURIES. -THE FIRST*
The window shattered inward.
And the man with no face stepped through.
