It's Fate

Samantha’s pov I was flabbergasted. My heart shattered and my lycan silenced. Why? He didn’t wait for my response. I had so many questions. What did I do? Didn't he like the way I dressed? I wondered as I looked at my sequined pink dress. Ana thought I looked hot in it. My jet-black hair was pinned into a bun. Perhaps I should have worn it down. My heart sank. Wasn't I his type? Frowning, I glanced at Lina. I wanted to ask her so many questions, but all I could do was give her a confused look. “I am so sorry,” she said, snapping out of her state of shock. “He is still mourning that b***h that broke his heart. I can't believe he would reject his mate, though.” She looked at me. “And I can't believe that you are his mate. This is great… but not great… he just blew it!” I pursed my lips and heaved a breath. Being his mate, I had to accept him completely. Not just the good parts, but everything. I would have to accept his flaws, too. Fate wouldn't have paired us together if we weren't compatible. Besides, he just got betrayed by someone he had been in love with for a long time. I could never fathom the pain and humiliation he endured. It has been quite some time since Lina shared what happened to him. She complained about how her brother got played right before his wedding. His fiancée disappeared a day before they were supposed to get married. All she left behind was a note that read she had to leave and that she hoped he would understand. There was no explanation, not a hint of where she went. All she wanted from him was to let her go. Her phone was unreachable, and somehow she managed to mask her scent. That left him shattered and depressed for weeks. So I understood where the rejection was coming from. Dragging him to the party was Lina’s attempt to help him out of the dark hole he was in. He didn’t want to, of course. But from their conversations, I could tell that he loved Lina dearly. So he agreed to attend for her. Alas, accepting the invitation turned out to have an unexpected outcome. “Oh, I hate that she-wolf. I never liked her. I only tolerated her for Luca’s sake and look at what she did. We know she left him for Alpha Salvatore. We recently heard about his pack discovering a gold mine in their territory, but my brother is blind to everything. He thinks she left to protect him.” Lina rolled her eyes. “How would she protect him by leaving?” Ana asked, making a face. “That doesn’t make sense.” “I know, right?” Lina said. “But he says Salvatore had been threatening her. He had been sending messages saying he would attack our pack and kill Liam. If she wanted to avoid conflict, she should come to the Night Shade pack as their Luna.” “Is it real? Did he see the messages?” I asked. Lina nodded her head. “He did see texts on her phone, but they could be doctored as far as I know. I wouldn’t put her past that. Why would Salvatore send messages to her? He didn’t even know she existed until Luca's engagement party. He could have had anyone he wanted. His pack has so many beautiful she-wolves who are far more qualified than that b***h. Dang that i***t,” Lina grumbled, gritting her teeth. Night Shade and Black Hunters were both in the Northern kingdom. It sounded like the packs were rivals, and a war could break out anytime. I knew I had to inform Axel about it because it was his kingdom, and perhaps I could tame the fire in Liam’s heart. He was my soulmate. I believed he would come around eventually. Maybe not soon. But I knew he would. I felt their gazes lingering on me. I smiled when I noticed their sympathetic gazes. “You are taking this rejection pretty well,” Ana said. “I understand him,” I said. “He isn’t ready for a mate yet.” “What are you going to do?” Ana sounded almost reluctant to ask. “The rejection isn't complete unless you accept it.” I offered a half-hearted laugh. “I am not accepting his rejection. I will follow him, of course. He is my soulmate. I waited for him for so long. I won’t give up that easily.” *** “That wasn’t what I expected from my mate,” my Lycan, Luna, complained as soon as I entered my room. I sighed. “Same here.” “That’s okay. We will be strong,” she said. “Moving to his pack means we won’t be living in our kingdom, Luna. I think we should keep our identities a secret. He is already running away from us. If they knew we were royalty, we might get pressured by the royal duties. I want to focus on the mate bond right now.” “You mean… we are going to renounce our title?” she asked. “No, we can’t do that. I don’t want to disappoint my mom and dad. I think if we can get him to accept us as his mate, we can convince him to come with me to our kingdom. Lina is a capable alpha wolf. Even after he leaves, the Black Hunters won’t have to suffer.” “You have a point,” she said. “So I mask my aura and pretend not to exist until it is time to reveal myself. Does that sound cool?” “Yeah,” my lips twitched. It wouldn’t be easy for either of us. Luna had been part of me for the past nine years, so keeping her a secret wouldn’t be easy. “I know what you are thinking, lady.” She interrupted my thoughts. “Don’t worry about me. He is our destined mate. This is the right thing to do. Besides, what's better than falling in love with your soulmate? We'll do this for love.” I smiled as I inhaled a deep breath. “Yeah, for love.” *** It was time to leave the college premises. Lina was excited about taking me to her pack. I knew I had the help I needed despite restarting my life in a completely new place. Axel graciously accepted and vowed to accept me as his subject, but only because I resolved to keep my Golden Lycan a secret. My parents, though, needed a little convincing. Although they preferred that I marry Axel, solidifying the relationship between both kingdoms, they agreed to let me pursue my mate. Being his mate was fate, after all. Why should we defy destiny? As soon as the car halted in front of their pack house, Lina jumped out of it and ran into her parents’ arms. I watched them for a while, smiling to myself, thinking about my own folks who would be at our palace in the south. Yes, I missed them, but I was doing this for love. When I noticed Luca's handsome face emerging from the main gate of the pack house, my heart raced. The excitement of seeing his sister was evident on his face. His eyes sparkled as he wrapped his strong arms around her, grinning from ear to ear. I heaved a breath, gathered my courage and opened the door. His alluring fragrance once again attacked my senses. I bit my lower lip and reminded myself not to act on impulse. He wasn’t ready for me. Plastering a smile on my face, I stepped outside and faced Lina’s parents. They looked like older versions of their kids. Their father was tall and buff like Luca, while their mom looked like a red-haired Greek goddess, just like her daughter. The only feature Luca inherited from his mother was the hair colour. I avoided making eye contact with him, but even from my peripheral vision, I could tell that the colour drained from his face. “Mom, dad, this is Samantha. My best friend,” Lina introduced me to her parents. We shook hands, their faces radiating kindness. “Is this the girl you said would stay with us for a while?” Lina nodded her head. “Yes.” “Hello,” I smiled at them. “Thank you for having me here, ma’am and sir.” “Our pleasure. Just call us Helena and Isaac,” she said and turned towards Luca. “Luca, did you ask the omegas to prepare a room for her?” I hesitantly looked at him. He looked like he was about to burst. Every muscle in his body was tense. “Are you okay? Why are you tense?” his mother asked him. “Why is she here? I rejected her once, isn’t that enough?” He stormed away from us. His outburst took his parents by surprise. “Rejected… Are you his soulmate?” His father asked me, shocked. Pursing my lips together, I nodded my head. “I didn’t accept his rejection. I understand why he isn’t ready for something new, but I would like to try.” They exchanged gazes, eyes widened, and lips parted. “Good gracious. You are Black Hunter’s true Luna! Thank you for not giving up on our son, and you are welcome to stay here for as long as you like.” I would say I was lucky. Not having to worry about being accepted by his pack would give me enough time to focus on him. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, and I was right. He avoided me like the plague during the first two weeks, but gradually he seemed to tolerate my presence. I, on the other hand, was falling desperately for him. I blamed the mate bond for that. It was so hard not to like him after getting to know him better. He was compassionate towards his pack members and fierce in facing their enemies. He was my dream alpha, and each time he ignored me, my heart sank. Days passed by, and he spoke to me on the day a month had elapsed since his rejection. I was working in the office with Lina when he entered. She excused herself and left us alone, giving me a glance on her way out. That’s when we talked. Well, he was being polite, but it was progress for someone who wouldn’t be in the same room as me. I summoned every ounce of courage and professed my love to him. My heart thumped in my chest, especially when he glared at me with widened eyes. “No. I am not interested. I reject you.” His words felt like sharp daggers plunging into my chest. Tears rolled down my cheeks, but I wiped them away. I knew I shouldn’t give up. I couldn’t.
