CHAPTER 4:THE FIRST SECRET

1436 Words
Amara woke before her alarm. For several seconds, she stared at the ceiling, trying to remember where she was. Then the events of the previous evening came rushing back. The Blackwood estate. Damian standing at the entrance. Victor's suspicious behavior. And the mysterious messages warning her not to trust Damian. She reached for her phone. There were no new messages. The silence bothered her. Whoever had contacted her knew about her investigation. They knew about Damian. Most importantly, they knew something about her father's disappearance. Amara had spent seven years preparing for this moment. She wasn't going to let a stranger frighten her away. She opened her laptop and brought up the file she had kept hidden for years. DANIEL WILLIAMS — CASE FILE Her father's name appeared at the top. Daniel Williams had been a respected financial investigator before he disappeared seven years ago. According to the official report, he had left work one evening and never returned home. His car had been found abandoned. His body had never been recovered. The authorities eventually closed the case. Amara had never accepted it. She opened the old report. There was one detail that had always bothered her. Her father had been carrying a black leather folder when he disappeared. The folder had never been found. Amara believed it contained the evidence he had discovered before his disappearance. She closed the laptop. Today, she needed answers. Across the city, Damian stood in his father's office. Victor Blackwood sat behind his desk, staring at a thick folder. "I had someone investigate Amara," Damian said. Victor immediately looked up. "You did what?" "I wanted to know who she really is." "I told you to stay away from her." "And I wanted to know why." Victor's expression hardened. "Some things are better left alone." Damian placed the folder on the desk. "She spent seven years outside the country. She returned suddenly, attended your political fundraiser, and somehow ended up having dinner with our family." Victor said nothing. Damian studied him. "You know more about her than you're telling me." "You're imagining things." "No. I'm noticing things." Victor stood and walked toward the window. "Stay away from Amara Williams." "Why?" "Because she's dangerous." Damian frowned. "She hasn't done anything." "You don't know what she's capable of." Damian shook his head. "Neither do you." Victor turned sharply. "Don't fall in love with someone you don't understand." Damian froze for a moment. Then he walked out. Later that morning, Amara met an old colleague of her father's at a quiet café. His name was Robert Hale. She had spent years trying to find him. Robert looked much older than she remembered. "You look like your father," he said quietly. Amara swallowed. "Everyone says that." "He would have been proud of you." "I wish I knew that." Robert looked around nervously. "Why did you come back?" "You already know why." He sighed. "I was afraid you would." "Then tell me what happened to my father." Robert lowered his voice. "Your father was investigating a network of illegal financial transfers." "Connected to Victor Blackwood?" Robert hesitated. "Connected to several powerful people." "Politicians?" "Politicians, businessmen, government officials." Amara leaned closer. "Did my father have proof?" "He had something." "What?" "A ledger." Amara's heart skipped. "What kind of ledger?" "A black leather ledger." She immediately thought of the missing folder. "Where is it?" "I don't know." "Robert, please." He looked frightened. "Your father gave me something the night before he disappeared." Robert reached inside his jacket and pulled out a small envelope. He pushed it across the table. Amara stared at it. "When did he give you this?" "The night before he disappeared." "Why didn't you give it to me before?" "Because I was afraid." "Of Victor?" Robert's expression changed. "Not Victor." Amara felt a chill. "Then who?" Before Robert could answer, a loud crash came from outside. He immediately stood. "Leave." "What?" "Leave now." "Tell me who knows what happened to my father." "Amara, go!" Robert rushed toward the back exit. Amara grabbed the envelope and followed him. When she stepped outside, she saw a man in a dark jacket standing across the street. He was watching her. Their eyes met. The man turned and disappeared into the crowd. Amara started after him, but within seconds he was gone. Her phone rang. Unknown number. She answered. "Hello?" Silence. Then a man's voice. "You should have stayed away." Amara's heart began racing. "Who is this?" "You don't know what you're getting yourself into." "Where is my father?" The caller paused. Then said quietly: "Ask the Blackwoods." The call ended. Amara stared at her phone. Ask the Blackwoods. She looked down at the envelope. Her hands trembled as she opened it. Inside was a photograph. Her father stood beside three men. One of them was Victor Blackwood. The second was another politician Amara recognized. But the third man was a stranger. She turned the photograph over. A handwritten message was written across the back. One of these men betrayed your father. Below it was a date. The exact date Daniel Williams disappeared. Amara stared at the photograph. Who was the third man? And why had her father trusted Robert with the picture? Her phone vibrated again. Another message appeared. Don't trust Damian. Amara slowly lowered the phone. She hated that the warning affected her. She had only known Damian for a short time, but something about him was different from what she had expected. He wasn't like Victor. He listened. He made her laugh. And, against her better judgment, she was beginning to feel something whenever he looked at her. That couldn't happen. Damian Blackwood was part of the family she had come to destroy. She couldn't allow feelings to interfere with revenge. That afternoon, Damian entered his father's office again. Victor was holding the same photograph. Damian stared at it. "Who is the third man?" Victor remained silent. "Father." "He was Daniel Williams' closest friend." Damian frowned. "Then why was he with you?" Victor's face darkened. "Because he betrayed Daniel." Damian stared at him. "What happened to him?" Victor looked toward the door before answering. "He disappeared." Damian's eyes narrowed. "Like Daniel?" Victor didn't answer. "Did you have anything to do with Daniel Williams' disappearance?" "Watch your accusations." "Then tell me the truth." Victor placed the photograph on the desk. "There are things about the past that could destroy this family." Damian looked at the picture again. "What things?" Victor said nothing. Damian turned toward the door. "If you won't tell me, I'll find out myself." He left. Victor remained alone. A few seconds later, Helena entered the room. "You should have told him." Victor shook his head. "Not yet." "It's been seven years." "I know." Helena looked at the photograph. "And now Amara has returned." Victor's expression hardened. "Which means we have very little time." That evening, Amara returned to her hotel and placed the photograph on the table. She studied the three men again. Victor. The other politician. The mysterious third man. She had spent seven years believing Victor Blackwood was the person responsible for destroying her family. Now she wasn't so sure. Her phone vibrated. Another unknown message. The truth is closer than you think. Amara stared at the words. Then another message arrived. And the person you trust most may be the one hiding it. Her mind immediately went to Damian. She closed her eyes. "No." She refused to believe it. But somewhere deep inside, a small voice whispered that she needed to be careful. Because her revenge had always been simple. Find the truth. Expose Victor. Make the Blackwoods pay. Now Damian stood between her and that plan. And she was beginning to fear that the man she had intended to use might become the man she couldn't bear to lose. Across the city, Damian stood in his father's study, staring at the same photograph. Victor had finally revealed the identity of the third man. Damian's face went pale. He knew that man. He had seen him countless times. He wasn't a stranger. He wasn't an outsider. He was someone who had been part of the Blackwood family for years. Damian looked at his father. "You knew." Victor said nothing. Damian's voice dropped. "He's already inside the family." Victor closed his eyes. And somewhere in the city, Amara was unknowingly getting closer to the same secret. The secret that could destroy the Blackwoods. The secret that could change everything she believed about her father's disappearance. And the secret that could put her life—and her love for Damian—in danger.
