CHAPTER 10I HAD SPENT THE DAY sitting, yet I was exhausted and fell at once into a deep sleep. The next morning I was still completely drained. I tried not to think of the proceedings of the previous day but the images I had seen kept invading my conscious mind. There was no court that day. One of the guards told me that the King and his Elders had gone to their respective farms to work. “In Asante today,” he said, “only the very old and the sick are excused. If the Asantehene himself spends at least one day every week using cutlass and hoe, who can refuse to do at least the same? As for me, I am also a farmer.
