CHAPTER 17THE VOYAGE HOME WAS UNEVENTFUL. We stopped at the U.S. colony of São Tomé, or Saint Thomas as we call it now, to take on fuel and supplies and offload, under cover of darkness, the sacks we had taken on at Mpoanokrom. The crew took shore leave in turns and I toyed with the idea of joining them with a view to hitching a ride home on a plane. I decided against. I wanted to use the enforced leisure of the journey across the Atlantic to complete this document, which I have succeeded in doing. I wrote it from the notes I kept throughout my stay in Africa, supplemented by my recollection of events and conversations in the few cases where my notes proved inadequate.
