In the metro, a middle-aged man carrying a French newspaper glances at Jonathan before starting a conversation with a clear French accent, "Paris is a city that never sleeps. You seem new here, aren't you?" Initially reserved, Jonathan decides to engage in conversation, perhaps to ease his tension, "Yes, I'm here on a short trip," he answers, keeping the conversation general.
"Make sure to enjoy every moment, but be careful. Paris, like any big city, has its hidden side," the man says, his eyes carrying a hint of warning before he gets up and leaves the train at the next station.
Once he arrives at his destination station, Jonathan exits the metro, feeling eyes still following him. He moves confidently, as if he were one of the city's locals, walking on the stone-paved streets, admiring the magnificent Parisian architecture, and breathes a sigh of relief when he reaches the specified address, an old building with a stone façade that reveals its age and story in every stone.
Before he can knock on the door, he feels a hand on his shoulder. He quickly turns around to find a woman looking at him with sharp blue eyes, "Jonathan? I've been waiting for you. I'm here to help," she says in a calm voice that carries strength and confidence. Jonathan looks at her in surprise, wondering about her identity and how she knew his name, and what events will unfold from this mysterious encounter.
As soon as she places her hand on his shoulder, Jonathan quickly turns around, his face reflecting a mix of surprise and tension. Marianne stands firmly in front of him, her eyes conveying a piercing and reassuring look at the same time.
"Jonathan?" Marianne begins in a calm voice, making Jonathan curious about how she knows his name.
"Yes, that's me. But how did you know my name? And who are you?" Jonathan asks, his voice hiding the concern he feels.
"My name is Marianne. I'm here to assist you in your mission. I was sent to guide you during your stay in Paris. All you need to know right now is that I am your ally," Marianne explains, casting a cautious glance around them.
Still wary, Jonathan decides to trust her, realizing that time is not on his side and that the mission ahead requires all the help he can get.
"What do I need to do now?" he asks, trying to overcome his confusion and focus on practical matters.
"There's someone you need to meet, his name is Emil. He has vital information that could aid you in your mission. But before you meet him, we need to make sure you're fully prepared for what awaits you," Marianne says, indicating that they need to move.
As Jonathan tried to assimilate the abruptly presented information, new questions emerged in his mind, prompting a need for clarification.
Jonathan: "Wait, Marianne, Elizabeth told me I was to meet someone named Alexander. Why do I now have to meet another person named Emil?".
Marianne, maintaining her composure, glanced around vigilantly before answering, as if to ensure no eavesdroppers were present.
Marianne: "Jonathan, the world you've entered is fraught with deceptions and tests. Emil is part of the test you must pass before meeting Alexander. He possesses keen assessment skills and will be able to determine whether you're truly ready to face what awaits you."
Jonathan, with an expression filled with doubt: "Tests? Nothing was mentioned about tests. How can I be sure that what you're saying is true?".
Marianne, in a reassuring yet firm voice: "I understand your hesitation, Jonathan, but rest assured, every step of this journey has been meticulously planned to ensure the mission's success. Emil will not harm you; rather, he'll aid you in understanding the true depth of what you're about to confront. You need to know whether you're genuinely ready to meet Alexander and face the challenges that await."
"What if this is all just a ruse? What if the organization harbors intentions far more sinister than I can imagine?" he wondered silently, feeling fear growing within him—a fear of the unknown and the consequences of his decisions.
The idea of fleeing and returning to London started to appear tempting in his mind, "Perhaps I should return to where I belong, to safety. But what about the consequences?" he pondered again, realizing that distancing himself from the organization could bring unpredictable repercussions.
"Will they chase me? Will I be able to live in peace knowing I might have become a target for them?".
In this moment of deep contemplation, Jonathan arrived at a decision, "No, I cannot flee; I must not flee. However, I need to be cautious. I must play their game until I find a way to safely uncover the truth." Jonathan decided to feign complete conviction in what Marianne had told him, using this time to gather more information and possibly find a way to expose the organization's true intentions without putting himself at risk. "I will continue on this journey, but with open eyes and a vigilant mind. I will protect myself first and foremost, and if it turns out there is real danger, I will find a way to retreat."
Marianne, calling out to Jonathan who seems lost in thought and silent, said, "Jonathan, is there a problem? Are you alright? Are you thinking about something?".
Jonathan: "No, I'm not thinking about anything specific, Marianne. I will trust you, but please, be honest with me. Are these tests dangerous?".
Marianne: "Every step on this path carries its risks, but they are necessary to ensure you're prepared for what's coming. I'll be with you at every step; you're not alone in this."
"What should we do now?" Jonathan wonders, his curiosity growing with every word Marianne says.
"I'll teach you how to recognize friends and foes, and how to move around Paris without drawing attention. There's a lot you need to know before you begin," Marianne answers, leading him away from the crowd and towards the small café that would become a stage for much learning and preparation.
As Jonathan and Marianne approached the café, the street buzzed with the city's usual sounds. Yet, upon entering, they found themselves enveloped in an entirely different atmosphere. The café, with its worn wooden floors and walls adorned with old photographic images of Paris, exuded a sense of warmth and history. The dim lighting lent the place an air of mystery and comfort simultaneously, making it the perfect spot for a confidential conversation.
They chose a table in a quiet corner, away from prying eyes. Jonathan felt a sense of relief as he sat down, taking in the surroundings and the people around them. The patrons were a mix of locals and some tourists, each engrossed in their own conversations or absorbed in reading a book.
After a few moments, the waiter approached, a young man with friendly features and a look of shrewdness in his eyes, "What would you like to drink?" he asked kindly. Marianne ordered a black coffee, while Jonathan opted for green tea, trying to cling to something that made him feel at ease in this new world he had entered.
"I want you to be cautious, Jonathan," Marianne began as soon as the waiter had left, her voice low and her eyes scanning the surroundings, "Not everyone here is a friend, and some people may be more than they appear."
Jonathan, absorbing her words, noticed a man at the other end of the café watching them. He couldn't tell if the man's gaze was merely curious or something more serious. "How can I distinguish between friends and foes here?" he asked, his voice carrying a subdued anxiety.
"You'll learn that in time," Marianne replied, "but the first rule is not to trust anyone too easily, and use your intuition. You're here not only to uncover secrets but to learn how to survive in a world that can be very harsh."
Their drinks arrived, and as Jonathan sipped his tea, he felt the weight of the task awaiting him. The mystery surrounding the organization and his mission in Paris began to unravel, yet every new piece of information led to more questions. With each sip of his tea, he realized the path ahead was filled with challenges and tough choices.
As Jonathan's pulse quickened in anticipation of what the future might hold, the conversation between him and Marianne deepened. "There's something you need to know about Emil," Marianne said, her voice dropping to a whisper, "Emil is not just a keeper of knowledge but was once at the forefront of the organization, privy to many secrets that could be dangerous in the wrong hands. Therefore, you need to be very careful about how you present yourself to him."
Jonathan felt the heavy burden of his mission. He understood that the road ahead was fraught with dangers and challenges. "How can I gain his trust?" he asked, his curiosity tinged with concern.
"Honesty and transparency are your keys," Marianne answered, "Emil values frankness and can easily detect lies. When you meet him, be truthful about why you're here and what you're seeking to find, and don’t hide anything you think about or anything that happened to you, as he is a person of much doubt".
