THE SOUND OF PURSUIT grew faint behind them, as Pony and Tom raced deeper into the maze of tunnels. The tunnel began to widen as air grew hot and moist. When they emerged into a giant cavern and found a large steaming lake, they paused to rest on the sandy shore that flowed into the lake. Drops of moisture fell from the roof of the cavern, as Pony gingerly crept to the side of the lake to drink. The water was warm, but refreshing. Tom came to Pony’s side and scooped up a handful. It did not quench his thirst. Would it ever be sated? Tom gazed across the massive lake and said, “I suppose this lake is full of man-eating lobsters, or poisonous goldfish, so swimming across it is a bad idea.” He stood up and took off his jacket, to spread his wings.
