Ciara's pov
The moment the door closed behind Liam, the room felt suffocating for me. I tried to hold my breath till Liam returned but I didn't think I would survive till then.
I tried not to think too much, to pretend that I didn't receive the scent and hot breaths on my skin last night from the man standing here as Liam's older step brother.
I let out some air and held on to the chair beside me, gripping it with my sweaty palm as he suddenly started to stride closer.
Like a man who owned the ground he stepped on.
“So you lied about your name" he paused "and You left early this morning”
“I don't know what you're talking about" I held up my chin even though I knew it was hopeless to lie.
“Oh" he smiled amusingly “I didn't think you will, considering how senseless I f****d you last night"
My insides burned with an aroused heat, one that made my core throb just from his words.
I looked away as he leaned closer.
“I wonder what my brother has to say about it"
My head snapped towards him almost immediately “please… don't say anything" I watched his unwavering expression “Liam can't know and Our relationship means so much to me"
Mateo chucked as he took a step back and folded his arms across his shoulder as if to observe me.
“Last night was a mistake." I say
"It wasn't for me.” Sounding displeased "… in factory I've been up all morning thinking about it”
He wasn't seriously flirting with me right now.
“Better? Um Incase you hit your head when you were little but you can clearly see that I am your brother's fiance”
“And?” he said lazily
“And? Are you Wilds just sick in the head or….
“You need me to shut up or what?” He cut in
I gulped before starting my speech.
“I love your brother… I really do. . I just . Please” my voice lowered. " he can't know about last night
He tilted his head, studying me like I was some sort of puzzle.
“You're very good at begging," he said quietly "You did that last night too”
My heart stuttered as I began to wonder how I got myself tangled with another insane Wild.
“Can you not say that” frustrated by how casually he took everything.
"Why" he was still smiling, dangerously “it happened”
"I know, just please" I whispered in desperation. “Mateo I'm begging you, this could ruin me”
It was the first time I had his name on my lips and suddenly it didn't sound bad.
I watched him debate with himself as if thinking of a solution, while I hoped and prayed he was debating to my favour.
All the speech about loving Liam was all about my father. He was the one I loved and I'd push through with the marriage if it would make him happy even though the best s*x I had was from a complete stranger who was no longer just any stranger anymore.
“Please," I forced my breath to be steady.
He leaves against his desk, arms folded across his chest and his eyes still feeding on me.
“I won't tell Liam," he said finally.
I suddenly felt light, like something very heavy had been lifted off my chest and tossed out the window.
“On one condition"
Someone caught it before it went through the window.
“No,” I said in a small whisper.
He raised a brow. “You haven’t even heard of it.”
Her voice shook. “I just, I have this feeling it's going to be bad”
Smoking as if amused yet again.
“Not entirely. I mean it is going to satisfy both of us. I'm going to make sure of"
He stepped away from the desk and strode to where I stood perfectly still.
I gulped as his fingertips rested on my chin. He lifted it up till my eyes were squarely staring directly into his.
“When I want you,” he said in a low, steady tone,
“you come. No excuses, no hesitation. Anytime I call you, you show up.”
Brushing his finger away from my chin, I stepped back.
“I can't do that, bring in something else .. Anything else."
Mateo leaned back to his table, reaching for a paper.
“I'll have it down on paper so you will know things is strictly confidential and breaking any terms on it would be considered violating our agreement, which comes with dire punishment."
I shook my head
“i can't do it Mateo . I'm just… I'm not that type of girl.
“last night, you were exactly that type of girl”
I hated that he reminded me of how uncontrollable I was.
I thought of Liam and the possibility of him walking in on us. In his position, it would be easy for Mateo to smile and spill everything. He had absolutely nothing to lose, unlike me who had my whole future depending on how much connection I had.
A connection like a relationship with Liam Wild.
It was bad luck that I had made a mistake that interrupted that balance.
“You'll tell him if I don't agree right?”
Mateo didn't answer, he didn't need to.
His calm shrug said it all.
My chest tightened with fear. Shame. Helplessness.
I thought of my father losing his job and hitting the table as he yelled at me, reminding me of my constant disappointment.
I thought if Liam's empty threats always felt too real, I thought of everything I could lose.
“Okay, yes"
Mateo pushed the paper and handed over a pen
"Sign here, your signature will be printed and copied to the original contract file”
He said all these with a tone of satisfaction.
I reached for the pen slowly as if waiting for a miracle for him to change his mind, I scribbled on the paper and pushed it back to him.
“Good girl" locking gazes with me “Be sure your wedding won't be delayed by anything"
I felt like my life had taken a new turn and I was playing a dangerous game with two brothers.
One I loved
And one who held my darkest secret in the palm of his hands.
The door knob twisted.
