The howl of wolves echoed behind Victor, unseen but chillingly close. A primal fear clawed at him, raising goosebumps on his skin. He ran, adrenaline pumping, until a figure materialized before him, making his heart leap into his throat. The silhouette was unmistakable. It was Amanda.
"Amanda!" he cried, his voice tight with anxiety.
Amanda spun around, startled. There was no time for explanations. He seized her arm, pulling her along as they fled. Carrying her significantly slowed his pace. Behind them, he heard the angry snarls and heavy breathing of the pursuing pack, the sound fueling his panic. At this rate, they were both doomed.
Then, a colossal tree loomed before them—a giant of unknown species, its branches gnarled and twisted, its bark a tapestry of bumps and knots. An idea sparked in Victor's mind. "Climb!" he urged.
"What?" Amanda's question was lost as Victor hauled her toward the tree, hoisting her onto a low-hanging branch. She understood instantly and began to scramble upwards. He followed, leaping with all his strength. As he looked up, a flash of pink beneath Amanda's loose pant leg momentarily blinded him—a vibrant, unexpected splash of color. In that split second of distraction, a gust of wind whipped past his legs, and he felt the sharp scrape of teeth near his ankles.
He yelped, scrambling higher, his head colliding painfully with Amanda's. She cried out, nearly losing her grip. Looking down, she saw the wolves at the base of the tree, snapping and snarling, poised to tear Victor apart. She climbed faster, Victor close behind. This time, he saw the pink clearly. Amanda's leg, the delicate blush of skin visible beneath the loose fabric, was alluring and strangely familiar. He remembered seeing that same shade of pink years ago when she was just a shy little girl. Now, the color remained, but its owner had blossomed into a breathtaking woman.
Victor swallowed hard, his throat suddenly dry. "Amanda," he said, his voice hoarse, "keep climbing. The higher we get, the safer we'll be."
Terror paralyzed Amanda, and she inched her way up the tree, her movements slow and deliberate. Seeing them climb, the wolves didn't relent, circling the base of the tree, their eyes fixed on their prey. Victor stopped, leveled his spear, and shouted down, "Come on! Anyone who dares, I'll kill them!"
The wolves, of course, couldn't understand his words. Over a dozen pairs of glowing green eyes surrounded the tree, their intensity unnerving. One bold wolf even leaped onto the trunk, its claws scrabbling for purchase on the thick, slanted bark. It climbed slowly but surely.
A smirk played on Victor's lips as he watched. "You're not afraid of death, are you?" he murmured, then, with a swift movement, thrust his rifle toward the largest wolf's head.
"A-woooo!" A piercing howl cut through the air. The shot found its mark, striking the wolf's scalp. Blood sprayed as the animal tumbled to the ground, its cries of agony echoing through the forest.
Victor's confidence soared with the successful kill. He sneered, his voice echoing through the trees, "Come on, then! Anyone else not afraid of death?"
His challenge remained unanswered. The wolves, surprisingly intelligent, seemed to understand the futility of climbing. They settled down at the base of the tree, their watchful eyes never leaving the two figures above.
Victor fell silent, unsure of what to do next. He looked up at Amanda. "This is a tough situation," he admitted.
"What's wrong?" Amanda asked, her voice still shaky, her confusion evident.
"They don't seem to want to leave," Victor explained.
Panic edged into Amanda's voice. "What do we do? If they don't leave, we're stuck up here!" She leaned against a branch, gasping for air, her delicate face flushed with exertion and fear. At that moment, Victor's gaze fell upon her, and a dangerous thought flickered in his mind. She looked like a ripe apple hanging from a branch, tempting and desirable. A sudden, intense thirst consumed him, a desire to pluck her from her precarious perch. But the thought was instantly banished. She was his brother's wife. The realization brought a wave of immediate regret.
He quickly lowered his head, his voice low. "We'll just have to see who tires first. This tree's big enough to rest. Should we keep climbing?"
Amanda, her eyes fixed on the glowing eyes below, gritted her teeth and resumed her ascent. But after only two steps, weakness overwhelmed her. She stopped, her voice barely a whisper. "Can you give me a boost? I can hardly hold on."
Victor nodded, reaching out, then hesitated, his eyes falling on her slender legs and the curve of her backside. A moment of internal struggle ensued. 'This is a critical moment,' he told himself. 'She shouldn't blame me for this.' He steeled his resolve, bracing himself against the tree trunk before giving Amanda a firm but gentle push on her backside.
A large hand clamped around Amanda's waist, yanking her upwards with surprising force. A shiver ran through her entire body. She bit down hard on her lower lip, stifling a scream. Her body was propelled several inches higher. Victor followed swiftly, his hand landing again on her backside. A soft, yielding sensation met his palm, momentarily stunning him.
Slowly, carefully, they climbed, one after the other, until they reached a point dozens of feet above the ground. There, the branches spread out, forming a relatively flat platform where they could rest.
Just as they were about to settle down, a deep rumble echoed from the inky sky. "What's happening?" Amanda whispered, her voice laced with apprehension.
Victor looked upwards, but the darkness offered no clues. "It's thunder," he replied, his own unease growing. His uncertainty was shattered a moment later by a brilliant flash of lightning that ripped across the sky. The sudden illumination transformed the night into day, widening Amanda's eyes with stark terror. The blinding light was instantly followed by a deafening clap of thunder, a sonic boom that vibrated through Victor's chest and left his ears ringing.
A soft, warm body hurled itself into his arms. A scream above the thunder reached his ears. Instinctively, Victor wrapped his arms tightly around Amanda, holding her close.
