The lights in the hallway broke rhythm like someone had forgotten how to breathe: one… two… three… then a sudden half-second blackout before flickering back on. No sound, just the sensation that the air itself had been paused and released. I stepped in with a small but stubborn instinct that this place didn’t particularly enjoy the company of the living. The walls were damp, the metallic tang in the air sharp enough to sit at the back of my throat—like the smell of something that hadn’t happened yet. Calyx walked a few steps ahead.
