I stand frozen in place, staring at the spot where Asmodeus disappeared into a portal. Did he really just give up on us? Was that him…leaving me forever?
Suddenly, I can’t quite catch my breath since mates are not supposed to be separated. Our bond is making me hurt in places I didn’t know existed. Why didn’t I stop him? Why didn’t I say something—anything—to make him stay?
Because you were scared, a small voice in my head whispers. Because deep down, a part of you was relieved to see him go. You hate demons. You’ve just been friendly towards Asmodeus because he is your mate.
Shame washes over me because it’s true: I fear demons more than anything else in this world.
But surely I have nothing to worry about, right? Asmodeus was just being dramatic. He will come back!
